Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Gibbs & Cox, Inc. said that William E. "Bill" Landay III, President of W.E. LANDAY Consulting LLC, has been elected to its Board of Directors effective June 20, 2017. "[VADM Landay’s] expertise in the areas of foreign military sales, DoD acquisition, and science and technology programs will be a tremendous addition to the future growth of Gibbs & Cox," said President and Chief Executive Chris Deegan. Vice Admiral Landay retired in 2013 after more than 35 years of Naval service. His final assignment was as Director of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) where he was in charge of the $400 billion DoD program responsible for the sale of equipment, defense technologies, training and other services to foreign governments.

Elbit Systems announced that it won a $40 million contract from the Brazilian Marines to supply advanced systems for computerization, electronic warfare, radio, and communications. The contract will be performed over a two-year period. The contract calls for the supply of cutting-edge technologies and operational capabilities, including a variety of Battle Management Systems (BMS) applications, C4I systems for artillery, latest generation of Soldier C4I suit as well as advanced EW capabilities. The systems will be deployed in fixed and deployed command centers and in vehicles/APCs and dismounted configurations, aiming to significantly enhance Marine Forces' operational effectiveness, and aligning the BMC with the most modern NCW (Network Centric Warfare) concept.

Sea trials for the newly refurbished U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) commenced on October 5, following a 20-month Extended Planned Incremental Availability (EPIA) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. Nimitz entered the shipyards in February 2015 for its fifth major maintenance period and completed the largest maintenance period to date without bringing the carrier into dry dock, according to Cmdr. The U.S. 6th fleet’s command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), entered the final stages of its renovation and overhaul at the Viktor Lenac shipyard, in Rijeka, Croatia, July 11, 2015. After successfully completing the majority of a seven-month docking, renovation, overhaul, and at sea trial, Mount Whitney is weeks from returning to its forward deployed port of Gaeta, Italy. Mount Whitney underwent a three-day sea trial in the Adriatic Sea to test the operational capability of the vessel. The command utilized the sea trial as a means of performing necessary maintenance and performance checks on renovated weapon systems, Command, Control, Communications, Computers, & Intelligence (C4I), control mechanisms, generators, and fuel systems.

Northrop Grumman Corporation informs it has completed the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) program's design, development and limited deployment phase for the U.S. Navy. CANES is a programmatic and technical consolidation of five legacy shipboard network programs. CANES provides a modern, common computing environment across the fleet to upgrade cybersecurity, command and control, communications and intelligence (C4I) and streamline logistics. Since winning the contract for the design and limited-production run for CANES in early 2012, Northrop Grumman has delivered 37 shipsets for various ship classes. The company leveraged its cyber expertise to ensure cyber-robust CANES systems.

Austal celebrated the christening of USNS Brunswick (JHSV 6) with a ceremony this morning at its shipyard in Mobile, Ala. USNS Brunswick is the sixth of 10 Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV) that Austal has under contract with the U.S. Navy as part of an overall 10-ship block-buy contract worth over $1.6 billion. JHSV 6, a 338-foot shallow draft aluminum catamaran, is a multi-mission, non-combatant transport vessel characterized by its high volume, high speed, and flexibility. It is the fourth ship to be named Brunswick after the seaport city located on the southeast coast of Georgia. The city of Brunswick played an important role during World War II as the site of a 435-acre shipyard that employed up to 16,000 workers at its peak. The yard produced 99 Liberty ships by the end of the war.

Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) integrated a system of systems operability testing (SOT) capability for combatant ships onboard USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54), which just completed an availability and sea trial period utilizing the new SOT combat readiness testing, March 6. SOTs are part of ensuring interdependent command and control systems work seamlessly. Combat systems command and control is referred to as C5I and encompasses everything C4I (command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence) does, but includes combat systems.
