Rolls-Royce Signs 'Environship' Ferry Agreement

Rolls-Royce sign a teaming agreement with Italian company Lauro Shipping to design new gas-powered Environship-concept ferries. This agreement marks the first time that a customer will utilise the Environship concept for a passenger vessel. This follows previous orders for cargo ships which all benefit from a range of Rolls-Royce technologies that will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 per cent compared to similar diesel powered ships. ASL Marine Gowing Strong

If there is a slowing in the marine industries no one told the people at ASL Marine in Singapore. Among other projects the shipyard is building a series of Roto Tugs, a series of large PSVs and a 196.8-ft dive support vessel. In November ASL was nearing completion of another in their series of diesel-electric emergency vessels for the Danish firm Esvagt. These red boats are equipped with five Cummins KTA19D powered 485 kW generators. This series of vessels carry C-names. Earlier vessels included the Esvagt Carina, Cassipeta, Carpathia, Champion, Caroline, Contender, Cobra and Castor.

Commodore Holdings Files For Bankruptcy

Florida cruise company Commodore Holdings Ltd. is the latest cruise company to succumb to the crunch from a financial crisis, as it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in late December and immediately was forced to suspend operation of its three ships. The Hollywood, Fla.-based company said it was unable to negotiate an agreement with its mortgage lenders in time to avoid canceling cruises aboard its ships the Enchanted Capri and the Enchanted Isle which sail out of New Orleans and the Crown Dynasty which sails out of Aruba. "We deeply regret having to take this action, but we had no other choice," Commodore CEO Fred Mayer said in a news release.

Rodriquez Cantiere Navali Wins Fast Ferry Contract

While much of the accolades for advanced fast ferry construction is heaped on Australian companies, Italy's Rodriquez Cantiere Navali has not so quietly built an enviable stable of business and references. Most recently the company emerged as the winning yard to build a new high speed ferry for Navigazione Libera del Golfo (NLG) in Naples, Italy. 50 (yard number 306) in May 2003 for service from Naples to Capri. Passengers will be accommodated on three decks with bar service on the main and upper decks. The as yet un-named vessel will be fully HSC compliant and will be classed by RINA. As has become a hallmark of the fast ferries built by Rodriquez, the vessel will have an advanced ride control system consisting of four anti-roll fins (two per side) and transom mounted intruders.

Costa Crociere Chooses Naples

The ceremony to inaugurate Costa Crociere’s new flagship will be held on 7th June 2003, staged by Valerio Festi and listed in the “Monumental May” calendar of events. Naples, November 7, 2002. Naples, renowned as an artistic and seafaring city, has been chosen to host the christening ceremony for the Costa Mediterranea, Costa Crociere’s new flagship under construction in the Kvaerner Masa Yards in Helsinki. The event will take place next year on 7th June. The news was announced on board her sister ship, Costa Atlantica, by the Chairman of the company, Pier Luigi Foschi, before an audience that included the Mayor of Naples, the Honourable Rosa Russo Iervolino, and the Chairman of the Port Authority, Senator Francesco Nerli.

Young Shipowners Meeting Held in Capri

The opening of a program of dialogue for the creation of synergy through collaboration with the Association of Young Businessmen was one of the main matters discussed at the AGM of Young Ship-Owners held on October 6 on the island of Capri under the presidency of Mauro Rizzo.
