Newport News Promotes Two
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced two promotions to the company’s leadership team at its Newport News Shipbuilding division: Dave Bolcar has been promoted to vice president of submarine construction, and Bill Smith has been promoted to vice president, fleet support programs. Having most recently served as director of the Columbia-class program, Bolcar is now vice president of submarine construction, which currently encompasses both the Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine programs.
HII Promote Chris Miner V-P In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announce promotion of Chris Miner as Newport News Shipbuilding's V-P of In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs. In his new position, Miner is responsible for planning and executing aircraft carrier overhaul programs and inactivations, including the upcoming USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) and the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) inactivation, as well as aircraft carrier fleet support work. RCOH and inactivation work is primarily performed at NNS.
Northrop Grumman Annual Shipyard 5K Fun Run/Walk
More than 400 employees, their family members and friends participated in Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) 5K Fun Run/Walk. The event was held at the company's Shipbuilding sector in Newport News, Va. on Oct.2. Jim Hughes, Newport News' vice president of aircraft carrier overhaul and carrier fleet support, welcomed shipbuilders and their families to the 5K. "This event is one of the many that we're doing this year as a part of our 2010 focus on our people," said Hughes. "What better things to focus on with our people than health, safety, wellness and quality of life.
Newport News Wins $3.8B Carrier Contract
Newport News Shipbuilding Inc. won a $3.8 billion U.S. Navy contract to design and construct the 10th and last Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier, CVN 77. The unnamed carrier is scheduled for delivery in 2008 and will serve as the first transition ship to a new class of carriers, Newport News said. The company will also be responsible for delivering the ship's warfare systems, which was a task previously performed by the Navy. That includes development and procurement of the warfare system through a subcontract to Lockheed Martin Corp. and overall integration of the system into the ship. The carrier's warfare system will incorporate a new multi-function radar system and an information network that allows new technology to be inserted in a cost-effective way, the company said.
