Sweden to Launch MSW for Ship reporting

On 1 October 2015 the Maritime Single Window (MSW) portal will be launched for reporting of information regarding entry at port. From that date reports that were previously made in SafeSeaNet Sweden (SSNS) will be made in the portal, and simultaneously the reporting system of Port of Gothenburg will be integrated with the MSW. Electronic ship reporting in the MSW portal becomes a reality on 1 October. The technical systems will be deployed in several stages and SSNS and Port of Gothenburg are first in line. This means that ship reporting is to be made in the MSW portal from the current date. During a transitional phase all other reports will proceed according to former routines to the authorities concerned.

IMG Enhance Marine Group Medical Insurance Program

International Medical Group® (IMG) a leader in designing, distributing and administering global medical insurance benefits, has announced its enhanced flagship marine group medical insurance program. According to IMG, the enhancements enable ship owners to provide their crew comprehensive coverage for eligible medical expenses, which is increasingly important with the enactment of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006). The MLC, 2006, which took effect August 20, 2013 and became binding in international law, establishes minimum working and living standards for all seafarers on those ships. As such the MLC, 2006, requires ship owners to provide health protection and medical care to seafarers on board their ship.

DHS Budget Request Up 6.8%

President Bush’s fiscal year 2009 budget request for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) represents $50.5 billion in funding, which is an increase of 6.8 percent over the 2008 fiscal year level – excluding funds provided in emergency supplemental funding. The request targets five areas, detailed in the following release of information from the DHS. The Department of Homeland Security’s main priority is to prevent terrorist attacks against the nation and to protect our nation from dangerous people. DHS will continue to prevent the entry of terrorists while facilitating the legitimate flow of people by strengthening border security efforts and continuing to gain effective control of America’s borders.

INTERTANKO to Intervene in Ballast Water Decision

A U.S. Federal judge in the Northern California District has granted INTERTANKO's Motion to Intervene on the court's decision that the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) exemption of ballast water discharges from the permit requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) was improper under the Clean Water Act. INTERTANKO filed this motion along with industry coalition partners the American Waterways Operators (AWO), the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA), the Lake Carriers' Association (LCA), the World Shipping Council (WSC) and the International Council of Cruise Lines (ICCL), referred to as the Shipping Industry Ballast Water Coalition, which is now a party in this case.

ICCL Adopts Guidelines to Prevent and Reduce Risk of SARS

The International Council of Cruise Lines (ICCL) and its 16 members today announced formal adoption of aggressive new guidelines to prevent the occurrence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) – both before and after ships sail. Developed in close consultation with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Health Canada, the measures are designed to protect ships’ passengers, crew and ports of call alike. Northrop Grumman Team Wins Navy Contract

A team led by Northrop Grumman Corporation will help the U.S. Navy streamline security assistance and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) for the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) through a contract under the General Service Administration's Millennia Lite contracting vehicle. Northrop Grumman's Information Technology (IT) sector if all options are exercised. Grumman IT as the industry leader for NAVSEA FMS. Northrop Grumman IT will provide a broad range of FMS program and acquisition management support services for the procurement of Navy ordnance, weapons and weapons systems, ships and ship components, and the construction and transfer of Navy ships, ship systems and equipment.
