Matson Orders Three LNG-fueled Containerships from Philly Shipyard

U.S.-based ocean carrier Matson announced it has placed a $1 billion order with Philly Shipyard for the construction of three new 3,600 TEU Aloha Class containerships.The first vessel is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2026 with subsequent deliveries in 2027.Matson, which aims to achieve a 40% reduction in Scope 1 fleet emissions by 2030 and net-zero Scope 1 by 2050, said the three newbuilds will be equipped with dual fuel engines that are designed to operate on either conventional marine fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Matson Installs Six Scrubbers

The U.S.-based provider of ocean freight transportation services Matson has begun the installation  exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) on six vessels deployed in its Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express services.The scrubbers installation is  part of its strategy to reduce fleet emissions in line with new worldwide regulations established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that take effect on January 1, 2020. Three of the vessels will receive the new equipment in 2019 and the remaining three in 2020.While new low-sulfur fuels designed to meet the new IMO emission standard have been in development for years in anticipation of the change, there is still uncertainty about their costs and availability.

Matson Launches China to New York LCL Service

Matson Logistics Supply Chain Services is expanding its less-than-container-load (LCL) capabilities by offering direct fast transit from China to the New York and New Jersey markets. The service is based on Matson’s China-Long Beach Express (CLX) service, which offers express Transpacific trade, and partners with JAD International for expedited coast-to-coast transport. “We listened to our clients’ needs and in collaboration with JAD International, we are proud to bring this premium service to the market,” said Jeffrey Ivinski, director of sales and marketing for Matson Logistics Supply Chain Services. “Matson created an alternative to costly air freight to the West Coast and now we are bringing expedited service to the important New York metro market.

Top US Shipping Execs to Receive USS Awards

Anthony Chiarello, Matthew J. Cox and James C. The United Seamen's Service (USS) 2015 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards (AOTOS) will be presented to Anthony Chiarello, President and CEO of TOTE; Matthew J. Cox, President/CEO of Matson Inc.; and James C. McKenna, President and CEO of Pacific Maritime Association. The maritime industry awards are to be presented at the 46th annual gala industry dinner and dance in New York on November 13, 2015. Recognition will also be given to American seafarers for specific acts of bravery and heroism while at sea.

Matson Senior VP Hoppes to Retire

Dave Hoppes, Matson’s senior vice president, ocean services, will retire March 31, 2015, the company announced. John Lauer, currently vice president, Transpacific services at the company's wholly-owned subsidiary, Matson Navigation Company, Inc., will succeed Hoppes as senior vice president, ocean services, effective March 31, 2015. The company also announced that Chris Scott, currently director, Asia at Matson Navigation Company, will succeed Lauer as vice president, Transpacific services at Matson Navigation Company, effective March 31, 2015, as part of the transition plan.

Lauer Joins Matson as Director, Transpacific Services

John P. Lauer has joined Matson Navigation Company as director, Transpacific services, for Matson's China - Long Beach Express. Lauer will lead Matson's U.S. sales efforts for its burgeoning China - Long Beach Express service and will focus on trade lane yield management and revenue enhancement strategies in conjunction with other Matson operations. He will report to Dave Hoppes, senior vice president, ocean services. Lauer comes to Matson with 20 years of sales experience, including a number of senior level executive positions encompassing maritime and logistics activities. Most recently, he was managing director, eastern region, for APL and APL Logistics at the NOL Group level. Lauer led these companies in reaching key performance sales and profit benchmarks.
