China Shares Ship Recycling Knowledge

IMO Workshop on Secure Shipping in Asia

Shipping forms the backbone of world trade, transporting around 80% of global trade by volume. No other method of mass transportation is as cost-effective or fuel-efficient.Each day, around 50,000 merchant ships deliver the things people need and want – from food, to clothes, fuel, raw materials, electronics, medication and more. The security of maritime trade is therefore paramount to people all over the world.One way in which International Maritime Organization (IMO) supports maritime security is through targeted workshops supporting countries to implement IMO measures. The latest of these events, on maritime and port security for Asian countries, took place in Ningbo, China (23-27 July).

GloMEEP Project Forges Ahead with Train-the-Trainer Workshop

A global Train-the-Trainer workshop on energy efficiency has been delivered in China (23-27 May), preparing the personnel needed to cascade knowledge on energy efficiency for ships and related efforts for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. The five-day intensive course was organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), within the framework of the Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) Project. The workshop was co-hosted by the China Maritime Safety Administration (China MSA) and Dalian Maritime University (DMU). The GloMEEP Project  aims to support increased uptake and implementation of energy-efficiency measures for shipping. China is one of the ten Lead Pilot Countries implementing the GloMEEP Project.

China, Russia, Sign Maritime Navigation & Safety MOU

The Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation have signed a MOU on navigational safety and marine environment protection in Beijing. Both sides reached a consensus on a comprehensive cooperation of maritime safety, marine environment protection, port state control, maritime search and rescue, personnel exchange and training and information exchange. Since the 11th conference in 2007 with the support of the Ministry of Transport of China and the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, Chinese and Russian maritime authorities conducted several rounds of consultations on the MOU and have now finally confirmed the cooperation framework and cooperation fields.

Incat Crowther Delivers Chinese-Built 35m CAT Ferries

Incat Crowther announced the delivery of two 35m Catamaran Passenger Ferries built by Afai Southern Shipyard in China. Hai Ju and Hai Yao were commissioned by Zhuhai High Speed Ferry Co, following a competitive tender process. Incat Crowther is proud of its partnership with Afai Southern Shipyard in both the successful bid and the construction process. The vessels accommodate 198 passengers, all seated on the main deck in comfortable reclining seats. A large bar is situated amidships, serving beverages and snacks as well as offering a tourist information service.

OSRO Builds Chinese Pollution Control Consortium

In response to regulations enacted on March 1, 2010 on the Prevention and Control of Vessel-Induced Marine Environment Pollution, a Hong Kong based firm – OSRO China Ltd - has laid the foundation for a consortium of oil spill response contractors throughout China’s ports that fulfills China’s latest pollution control legislation. OSRO China was founded as a result of the Chinese Government’s recent approval of the Regulations of The People’s Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Vessel Induced Marine Environment Pollution. Of particular concern to ship owners was the requirement for pollution control agreements to be executed with local Oil Spill Response Organizations for ships carrying hazardous substances or of greater than 10,000 Gross Tonnes (GRT).
