VT Halter Launches New Ferry for Virginia

Mississippi shipbuilder VT Halter Marine, Inc. has launched a new ferry, Powhatam, for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).In November 2016, VT Halter Marine was awarded the contract for the design, construction and delivery of the new 499-passenger/70-vehicle ferry that will replace the current vessel, the Virginia, which was built in 1936. The new ferry Powhatam, measuring 270ft x 65ft x 15ft, is capable of holding up to 70 passenger vehicles, or 14 trucks/buses…

Low Water Mississippi: USACE Outlines Action Plans

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division Commander discusses Corps' plans with state & local representatives. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division Commander Maj. Gen. John Peabody and St. Louis District Commander Col. Chris Hall met with state and local representatives yesterday in Alton, Ill., to discuss current and future actions the Corps will take to maintain a safe and reliable navigation channel during low water. The meeting, which was led by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), was also attended by Capt. Byron Black, U.S. Coast Guard commander of the Upper Mississippi River Sector, Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Ill.), Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.), Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon (D-Ill.) and river industry representatives.

American Club Strengthens NY-Based Underwriting Team

Recruitment of Asian Specialist. In a move to add extra underwriting expertise to its New York team and further enhance its growing presence in Asia, the American P&I Club’s managers have recruited a well-known Asian specialist. Chris Hall joins Shipowners Claims Bureau, Inc., New York, on September 1. He will be vice president – underwriting, reporting to Stuart Todd as head of underwriting in this capacity. Hall has worked in Singapore and Hong Kong with the Skuld Club since 1999 when he joined its Hong Kong office. Latterly, in Hong Kong, he was vice president, marketing, and senior lawyer.
