TOTE, Inc. President and CEO Anthony Chiarello was honored by The Navy League of the United States with the Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award at the organization’s annual convention and Sea Service Awards Luncheon in Long Beach, Calif. last week. The Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award, named for a patron and past president of the Navy League, was presented to Chiarello in honor of his achievements during his more than 30 year career with maritime organizations and “contributions to protecting and growing the privately-owned U.S. Chiarello, who joined TOTE, Inc.

Prior to TOTE, Inc., the largest of five operating groups owned by Seattle-based Saltchuk Resources, Inc., which includes five companies organized in maritime, logistics and ship management lines of business, Chiarello, was the COO and executive vice president at NYK Logistics (Americas), Inc. Prior to NYK, Chiarello was with the AP Moller/Maersk organization for 16 years.

Logistics industry leaders detail important shifts in sustainable practices at the recent 2013 Georgia Foreign Trade Conference (GFTC). From major retailers to trucking and shipping, the companies represented at the 45th annual GFTC, are making major strides in emissions control, reduced energy consumption and cost savings. “American companies and ports are working together to reduce the environmental footprint of the transportation sector,” said Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Curtis Foltz. James Jack, executive director of the Coalition for Responsible Transportation (CRT), said “greening” the supply chain is a common theme. “It’s no secret that shippers have begun to factor environmental performance into their supply chain decisions,” Jack said.

The Coalition for Responsible Transportation (CRT) today commended one of its members, Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE), for becoming the first container shipping line to announce that it is converting its ORCA class vessels to use Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as their primary fuel source. The conversion will advance the use of alternative fuels technology in container shipping and accelerate the use of natural gas as a cleaner domestic energy source. “TOTE’s deployment of LNG ocean vessels is a truly extraordinary accomplishment. Saltchuk Resources has promoted Anthony Chiarello, to president & CEO of TOTE, Inc. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in conjunction with the Coalition for Responsible Transportation and the Environmental Defense Fund, is launching a new initiative to protect public health and the environment and promote sustainable economic growth by reducing pollution from thousands of short-haul trucks that service the nation’s ports. The new EPA SmartWay initiative will green the nation’s supply chain by reducing harmful diesel emissions from dray trucks – large diesel trucks that are widely used in port facilities to haul freight from cargo ships to nearby local distribution points. “U.S. ports generate jobs and are critical to our nation’s economy,” said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.
