The Chinese government on Wednesday rolled out more details of the building work it is undertaking in the disputed South China Sea, listing lighthouses, communications stations and other facilities for civilian and emergency use. China stepped up its creation of artificial islands last year, alarming several countries in Asia and drawing criticism from Washington. There have been recent tensions between the Chinese navy and the U.S. military around the Spratlys. China, which said this week some of the reclamation work will be completed soon, says the construction on the islands will help with maritime search and rescue, disaster relief, environmental protection and offer navigational assistance as well as have undefined military purposes.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been selected to supply integrated bridge systems (IBS) for two new vehicle-passenger (RoPax) ferries being built for Stena Line at Wadan Yards in Wismar, Germany. The IBSs for the two ships will be based on Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine’s advanced VisionMaster FT navigation technology with TotalWatch multi-function workstations. SeaWave LLC announced the completion of two new communications stations in South Texas and Seattle, Wash. The new stations consist of multiple antenna arrays which bolster SeaWave’s world-wide coverage, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico, South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the Pacific coast. The new communications stations are just two of SeaWave’s many dedicated directional antennas located throughout North America and Europe and complement existing Satellite and GSM solutions already offered by SeaWave. “These new communication stations were designed and built to support the increased network performance and efficiency made possible by SeaWave’s suite of communications products,” stated Joe Estrada, Director of Operations, SeaWave LLC.
