CMMI's First Life Time Award for Inderjit Singh

The country's largest community of Mariners who had congregated for their Annual Meet yesterday under the banner of the Company of Master Mariners' of India (CMMI) extended their greatest honor to one of the founders, the 92-year old Capt Inderjit Singh. In the presence of over 1,000 strong gathering Capt Philip Mathews, Chairman of CMMI presented Capt Singh with the most prestigious "CMMI Lift Time Achievement Award", which the august body is bestowing for the first time in its nearly 60 years history. Marking the occasion Capt Mathews said, "This first award is bestowed for the first time on our legendary Capt Singh, Fellow Life Member, who was Captain Superintendent of T. S. Bhadra, T. S. Dufferin and T. He went on to remark that the CMMI believes that 'We are what we repeatedly do.

CMMI Backs New Container Weight Safety Measures

“Safe Container – Steering Changes” – SOLAS Amendment

With the SOLAS Convention now requiring container weight verification from 1st July 2016 onwards following the amendment approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) last November, the Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) jointly with the Indian Maritime Administration conducted a Conference on “Safe Containers Steering Changes” on 10th December at The Lalit, Mumbai. The objective of the conference being to bring together various stakeholders in the container supply chain and provide an opportunity for an in-depth understanding of the different issues and their implications. Deepak Shetty, the Director General of Shipping and Additional Secretary, Government of India, stated that the Indian Maritime Administration was totally prepared to implement the new requirement.

CMMI Establishes Kolkata Chapter

The formation of a chapter of The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) last week in Kolkata comes as a major break-through. Though CMMI was formed in India in 1956, with its Head office at Mumbai, it was able to establish in 12 chapters at various cities in India such as Chandigarh, New Delhi, Dehradun, Patna, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Goa, Mangalore, Bangalore and Kochi. But all effots in establishing a chapter in Kolkata failed for the last sixty years of its existence despite various determined efforts made on several times. According to their spokesman, the difficulty was because a local Kolkata Association of Master Mariners was in existence.

CMMI’s Maritime Potpourri Focuses on Raising the Bar

The growing popularity of “Maritime Potpourri” Conference organized by the Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) was evident yet again on 25th July, 2015 when a bigger turnout of participants ensued at the well-known venue, the Maritime Training Institute Auditorium of the Shipping Corporation of India, Mumbai. One major reason being that vital and pertinent issues are focused at these events, issues that have a strong bearing on the day-to-day operations of mariners. Another being that this conference brings together not just the mariners, nautical architects, and marine engineers but also top officials from the administration, regulators, coast guards, navy, etc., thus often offering an opportunity to sort out problems on-the-spot and have things put in right perspective.

‘Maritime Spectrum’ of CMMI a Big Draw

For The Company of Master Mariners of India, the conference “Maritime Spectrum” that comes at the turn of each year has become a brand in itself, and each one witnessing a bigger gathering of mariners both on shore leave as well as others in land-based jobs. The organizers have been putting in a lot of effort to structure the programs so that participants benefit from them for furthering their career besides providing up-to-date information and details about the latest developments. This year too, the popular Panel Discussion at the Maritime Spectrum 2015 which focused on “Shore Based Careers Options for Seafarers” drew much attention. Prominently, the list of speakers featured some leading personalities who have made it big after quitting the sea.

CMMI, SPNM & ICS Focus on Container Weights

Three major maritime organizations, the Company of Master Mariners of India, the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and Shipping Professionals Network-Mumbai teamed up to focus on the recent International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) initiative on container weight verification. In this regard, a joint conference was held last weekend to deliberate on “Container Weights – Vagaries and Variances’ at the Maritime Training Institute of the Shipping Corporation of India’s auditorium, Powai, Mumbai. The event saw a record number of participants from not just the shipping companies but also those into maritime training, exporters and importers, ship charterers, MTOs, freight forwarders, insurance firms, manning and ship management, logistics, et al.

Shipping Corp appoints New Director of Bulk Carriers, Tankers

Capt. Sunil Thapar has been appointed as Director of Bulk Carriers and Tankers as of January 2011. He is a holder of Master (Foreign Going) Certificate of Competency issued by Ministry of Shipping and MSc (Shipping Management) from the World Maritime University, Malmo Sweden.
