Schulte Group unveiled its next generation design for an liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker vessel (LBV), which it said is engineered to be easy-to-use and reduce last-mile costs.The unique vessel design, presented at Gastech Exhibition and Conference in Milan, does away with the need for fenders and spacer pontoons, replacing them with an integrated outrigging system that’s compatible with any vessel type and can be operational in five minutes with the push of a button. Same applies to the telescopic crane, which extends over 40 meters over the water and can be adjusted to any required reach.

Alfa Laval will soon fire-up its new production line for Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 in Qingdao, China.According to Alfa Laval, the majority of PureBallast 3 installations occur at Asian shipyards, even when the vessels themselves are flagged in other regions. When the global wave of ballast water treatment system retrofits begins to subside in 2024, Asian shipyards will become even more dominant as the focus shifts to newbuilding. “We are growing with our customers, and the future of ballast water treatment installations is undoubtedly in Asia,” says Peter Sahlén, Head of Alfa Laval PureBallast.

New partners have joined the Open Simulation Platform (OSP) initiative, which aims to create an open source digital platform which will allow the creation of so called “digital twins” in the design of ships. Kalmar, part of Cargotec, will organise its first hackathon "CargoHack", at its Technology and Competence Centre in Tampere, Finland on 8-10 April 2016. The event will be organised in collaboration with Tieto Corporation and supported by their well-thought-out hackathon concept "CXHack". The event will bring together upcoming, brilliant and agile tech minds, supported by the Kalmar experts, to help solve some of the most challenging issues that terminals are facing today. Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has announced a large contract to heighten and extend the handling capabilities of eight ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at MSC Terminal VLC in Valencia, Spain. The order is the largest ever for Kalmar Crane Upgrades business. The project was signed into Cargotec's 2015 third quarter intake, and all cranes are scheduled to be operational by mid-2017. MSC Terminal VLC has chosen to upgrade their STS cranes to accommodate larger vessels in anticipation of growth in container movements. The Paceco cranes are currently limited to a maximum vessel size of 16,000 TEUs. Kalmar will extend the boom on all eight cranes by six metres and heighten six of the cranes by 10 metres, increasing the terminal's capacity to serve ships carrying up to 19,000 TEU (MSC OSCAR type).

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has introduced its next generation automatic stacking crane (ASC) system at the TOC Europe exhibition in Rotterdam. Featuring future-proof technology, it is the most efficient and productive ASC system ever. By enabling smooth and fast automation deployment, it allows terminals to deliver high throughput as well as a predictable and reliable performance. At the heart of the new ASC system is the Kalmar 5th generation automatic stacking crane. The crane has an optimised lightweight structure with a -10% weight reduction compared to previous generation, which decreases energy consumption and offers savings in operational costs.

Coldharbour Marine Ltd. has appointed Professor Bruno Pollet to head its R&D department. Bruno Pollet moves to Linby, Nottinghamshire from the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa where he was Professor of Energy Materials and Systems and Director of the National DST Hydrogen South Africa Systems Competence Centre, an industry led R&D group with an emphasis on prototype development and manufacturing. Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has been awarded a contract to provide an integrated automation system to handle operations at Victoria International Container Terminal Ltd's (VICT) new terminal in Melbourne, Australia. According to the contract, Kalmar will be responsible for the delivery of the control systems of automatic stacking cranes (ASCs) and AutoShuttles, and terminal logistic system (TLS) as well as for the integration of the system components and terminal operating system (TOS). The value of this new automation contract is approximately EUR 15 million and it has been booked into Cargotec's 2014 fourth quarter order intake. The contract follows an order for 12 ASCs and 11 AutoShuttles received in September 2014. Furthermore, the TOS will be provided by Navis, part of Cargotec.

A successful Maritime Resource Management (MRM) Facilitator training event concluded today in Makati City, Manila, Philippines as 22 participants from China, Germany, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore had gathered for the two-day event held at the European Training & Competence Center (ETCC) Inc. to be trained and certified as MRM Facilitators. Martin Hernqvist of ALL Academy, trainer at the event, said the event was a success thanks to the active participation from the attendees.

Imtech Marine was selected as supplier of the new Research Vessel ‘Sonne’. Imtech designs and installs the complete HVAC system for accommodation areas, laboratories and machinery spaces, as well as the redundant cold and warm water supply system with a combination of turbo chillers and absorption chillers.

In addition to recent €82-million orders for marine services and maintenance, Imtech establishes a Global Control Center for ship tracking. René van der Bruggen, CEO Imtech says; 'In the marine market, Imtech is working towards strategic growth in its services and maintenance activities and a strong expansion of the number of services branches along important shipping routes. Imtech now has the most extensive global service network in the marine market. These services branches focused previously on navigation and communications technology, but now offer Imtech's entire marine services package, leading to cross-selling and further growth. Rolls-Royce officially opens its new European Marine Technology and Training Centre in Ålesund, Norway. The celebration, whose guest of honour was HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, marked the formal opening of this 3,000m² ultra-modern facility, in the heart of Norway's maritime cluster. The centre features the latest Rolls-Royce marine technology and equipment to support customer training and simulation requirements and is particularly focused on offshore deepwater oil and gas exploration and production activities.

Cargotec appoints Frank Kho to lead terminal solutions development and container terminal projects. Mr. Kho brings with him over 20 years of industry experience in several senior management positions at world's leading port operators, such as the Antwerp terminals of PSA and several terminals of HPH. He has headed container operations with significant operational efficiencies in cost per unit moved and, most notably, with improved service levels. In Cargotec, Mr Kho will be responsible for leading the development of new solutions to enable customers' business processes run better as well as for defining and integrating solutions to specific needs of greenfield and brownfield container terminal projects.

Kongsberg Maritime AS, Simulation & Training has made an agreement with the Research Council of Norway to form a user-directed research program called SIMAR - Simulation of Demanding Maritime Operations - which is aimed at improving simulation training by enhancing focus on human factors. The main goal of the research project is to obtain new and improved knowledge of human factors in a learning environment based on simulated complex maritime operations, in order to develop a new generation of research based, maritime simulators for demanding and risky operations, e.g.

Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading ship power system integrator, strengthens its offering in the mid-size, low-speed engine sector by adding new 62- and 72-bore low-speed engines to its portfolio. These standardised engines offer high propulsion efficiency, reliability, and optimised total cost of ownership for customers in the bulker, tanker, and feeder container markets. Both engines employ well-proven Wärtsilä low-speed technology, and incorporate electronically-controlled fuel supply and control.

Cargotec will establish a global competence centre for container terminals development in Singapore. By establishing a competence centre close to customers in Singapore, Cargotec will further strengthen its ability to provide total solutions for its container terminal customers in the whole Asia-Pacific region. "Customer perspective is at the core of Cargotec's strategy. In order to better understand customer needs, Cargotec needs an extensive geographic presence and tight collaboration with local customers, partners and other stakeholders.

Cargotec to partner with DP World in port automation project for London Gateway. Cargotec has been chosen as the preferred partner to supply 40 Kalmar automatic stacking cranes with related technology and 28 Kalmar shuttle carriers to DP World's deepsea container port London Gateway. Cargotec and DP World have signed a cooperation agreement and aim to finalise the contract shortly. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the intended contract however, a typical value of this size of a project is around EUR 100-150 million depending on the scope of the delivery.

Cargotec has won a contract to supply ten state-of-the-art Kalmar automatic stacking cranes and 17 customer specific automatic shuttle carriers to leading terminal services' provider TraPac Inc, in Los Angeles, USA. The equipment will be delivered to TraPac Inc, a subsidiary of Mitsui OSK Lines, in 2012 and 2013. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the order. The order has been booked in the third quarter of 2011. Lennart Brelin, Cargotec Executive Vice President, Americas said this order reinforced the company's position as a leading supplier in port automation.

Cargotec appoints Tom Svennevig Vice President for MacGregor advanced load-handling business. Cargotec has appointed Tom Svennevig as Vice President responsible for the company's advanced load-handling business line as of 24 October 2011. Mr Svennevig is experienced in the offshore business, and he joins Cargotec from Aker Pusnes in Norway where he was Vice President, Deck Machinery. Mr Svennevig is based in Kristiansand, Norway, where he also assumes the role of Managing Director of Cargotec Norway AS.

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has developed a guide outlining major methods and procedures involved in ship lay-ups. The guide gives technical assistance to shipowners focusing on the maintenance of class, ship's safety and operability. Deactivating vessels in an effort to save costs requires planning and investment in the process. It is imperative that ships are laid up technically correctly to reactivate the ship successfully when the economic conditions are more favorable. "With our guide we offer technical consultancy support for the shipowners. On request, Germanischer Lloyd will also carry out surveys serving purposes such as consultation and cooperation in applying the necessary measures", explains Carsten Beese, Head of Competence Centre Fleet Service Management at Germanischer Lloyd.

Cargotec’s Kalmar business area is strengthening its global presence in the ship to shore (STS) cranes market by commencing STS production and engineering in Asia. Until now, Kalmar’s STS cranes have only been offered to the European market. Jorma Tirkkonen, President, Kalmar Container Crane System Division, Cargotec said “Our customers have asked us to consider delivering STS cranes to terminals outside Europe. We decided that now it is a good time to target increased volumes by starting to offer our STS cranes in all continents. The decision supports our strategy of growing our business and presence in the Asia Pacific region and the Americas, where we also have a strong local service network for our customers.

Cargotec has received two significant Kalmar ship-to-shore (STS) crane orders for customers in Mexico and Guadeloupe. Delivery of the crane to Port Autonome de la Guadeloupe in Guadeloupe and the crane for Pinfra’s subsidiary, Infrastructura Portuaria Mexicana in Altamira, Mexico are scheduled for the last quarter 2010. Infrastructura Portuaria Mexicana is preparing to better serve its clients with the expected revival in the global economy by increasing its capacity by purchasing newer and more efficient equipment in Altamira terminal with the addition of the new Kalmar STS crane. The crane has an outreach of 160.7 ft, 62.3 ft backreach and 121.4 ft hoisting height.
