CMA to Host Cyber Security Panel

U.S. Jeffrey G. Lantz, Director of Commercial Regulations and Standards for the United States Coast Guard’s Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety, Security and Stewardship is slated to moderate a special session of a panel discussion consisting of a Coast Guard Rear Admiral and shipping industry professionals on critical cyber security issues and concerns for the industry. Captain to Recount Refugee Rescue at CMA

Captain Joshua Bhatt is a featured speaker at the Connecticut Maritime Association’s Shipping 2015 Conference in Stamford at the Hilton Stamford Hotel in the Harbor Point Room (Lobby Level). The captain and his crew are responsible for the rescue of more than 500 refugees who were onboard a human trafficking ship from Northern Africa to Europe in October 2014. The Captain’s presentation on March 25 at 4 p.m. will be part of a larger international shipping industry examination of the still growing tragedy. According to the United Nations’ Refugee Agency, more than 200,000 people, including both migrants and refugees, have crossed the Mediterranean Sea fleeing violent chaos in Syria, Libya and other Northern African countries.

While increased regulation is often cited as the primary culprit driving shipowners to adopt new energy efficient technologies and practices for their ships, one major shipowner has a differing opinion. “You can make the argument that regulations are what’s driving it, but personally I think it’s more economics,” said Chris Errington, Director of Engineering at Maersk Line. RADM Mary Landry to Keynote WISTA Luncheon

Grasso said that Rear Admiral (RADM) Mary Landry (United States Coast Guard (USCG) Retired), the Federal On-Scene Coordinator during the first days of the Deepwater Horizon incident, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s WISTA luncheon held on March 19th at the beginning of the Connecticut Maritime Association’s Shipping 2012 conference. In recognition of the International Maritime Organization’s “Year of Piracy”, WISTA USA hosted world renowned piracy negotiator, Suzanne Williams QPM, as their keynote speaker at its sixth annual WISTA USA luncheon on Monday, kicking off the Connecticut Maritime Association’s Shipping 2011 conference. The luncheon was attended by nearly 250 industry professionals and maritime cadets.
