Aberdeen Harbor Welcomes First Ship
Aberdeen Harbor welcomed its first cruise vessel as it prepares for 12 expected visits to the city during the summer season. The arrival of the cruise vessel Island Sky, famed for its large suites and spacious outside decks, signals the start of the season when it arrives tomorrow (May 21) for the first of what will be three visits as it tours the Scottish Islands and Scandinavia over the course of the summer. Many of the cruises scheduled on such vessels this year will start and end in Aberdeen, with Aberdeen becoming a common cruise embarkation point.
First Cruise Ship Of The Season Arrives At Aberdeen Harbour
Aberdeen Harbour will welcome ten cruise calls this summer, with four vessels making their first ever visit to the port. The arrival of Noble Caledonia’s MS Quest, a small expedition liner carrying up to 50 passengers, heralded the start of the cruise season on Friday (May 6). A unique small vessel weighing in at 1268 tonnes, she spent the day in Aberdeen before leaving to explore the Copinsay Islands off Orkney, Isle of Lewis, St Kilda and Oban amongst other destinations. Study: Cruise Contributes €10 billion in Europe
The buoyant cruise industry now accounts for more than a quarter of a million jobs in Europe, over €10 billion direct expenditure and 15 million visits to European ports. The results were unveiled by the European Cruise Council (ECC) at the industry’s second annual “European Cruise Contribution”. “This is the first time we’ve been able to compare annual trends and the impact of the cruise industry on European job creation, wealth and tourism,” said David Dingle, chairman of the ECC and chief executive officer of Carnival UK.
Cruise Industry Set to Increase Jobs in Europe
The growing popularity of cruise vacations and European shipyards’ dominance of global cruise ship orders is set to have a major impact on jobs, wealth creation and inbound tourism in Europe, according to the results of a “European Cruise Contribution” report released at a major conference in Brussels. “This is the first time that figures have been available to demonstrate the full economic value and scale of the total cruise industry in Europe,” said Mr Pier Luigi Foschi, chairman of the European Cruise Council (ECC) and chairman and chief executive officer of Costa Crociere SpA. The ECC commissioned the report together with Euroyards, MedCruise and Cruise Europe.
