European Commission Signs Grant Agreement: Official Start of NAVAIS
With the signature of INEA (Innovation & Networks Executive Agency of the European Commission) on the Grant Agreement of NAVAIS, the project officially started on June, 1 2018. NAVAIS is a multiannual research- and innovation program for the shipbuilding industry. The results of NAVAIS will increase efficiency in design and flexibility in production networks. In total, the European Commission will invest € 6.5 million Euros ($7.5 mln) over a period of four years, by means of the Horizon 2020 program, the research- and innovation program of the European Commission.
New Asset Integrity Management System Launched
Bureau Veritas has launched Veristar AIM 3D asset integrity management system, based on technology partner Dassault Systems’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The new solution combines a digital twin of any marine or offshore assets with smart data in a collaborative environment. Veristar AIM 3D will be used in the design, development and implementation of the operational lifecycle, to reflect and predict the condition of any asset, or fleet of assets. The solution supports risk based inspection and condition based maintenance approaches.
NKK Partners with Dassault and IBM for Shipbuilding PLM
IBM and Dassault Systems announced that NKK Corporation has signed an agreement with IBM Product Lifecycle Management and Dassault Systems around PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) for shipbuilding. PLM solutions based on V5 architecture developed by Dassault Systems and marketed by IBM worldwide, is setting future industry standard which help shipbuilding companies to reduce the development period as well as further improve their products. CAD/CAM: Producing Better, More Cost Efficient Ships
The advent of software solutions has infiltrated nearly every sector of the maritime market - from propulsion performance monitoring packages to personnel. It arguably has had no greater impact, though, than in the design and construction of new vessels. CAD/CAM/CAE programs are invaluable assets to the designer, builder and operator of vessels of all sizes and dimensions. DD 21 Alliance Taps Dassault Systems
The DD 21 Alliance has announced a development acceleration agreement with Dassault Systemes CATIA Version 5 and ENOVIA to support the complete Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) of the U.S. Navy's Zumwalt-class Land Attack Destroyer (DD 21). Under the agreement, Dassault Systemes will develop dedicated shipbuilding software solutions as requested by the Alliance. The DD 21 Alliance, Bath Iron Works and Litton's Ingalls Shipbuilding, was formed to accomplish the DD 21 five-phase program for radical breakthrough capabilities. By aggressively applying advanced technologies, DD 21 exemplifies the transformation of the military industrial complex as the first class of the U.S. Navy's Surface Combatants for the 21st Century. while reducing crew size and lowering overall ship life-cycle cost.
IBM , Dassault Systems Collaborate on Platform Design
IBM and Dassault Systems announced that PLM solutions from IBM and Dassault Systems are driving a multi-national collaborative global design and manufacturing oil platform project that includes China-based Yantai Raffles Shipyard, Norwegian offshore technology company Sevan Marine, and Brazil's state-run oil company, Petrobras. The complex Sevan Stabilized Platform (SSP) 300 project, wherein Yantai Raffles builds the Sevan Marine-designed oil platform, utilizes CATIA, ENOVIA and DELMIA from Dassault Systemes and epitomizes the advantages that PLM brings to worldwide industry, according to Brian Chang, CEO, Yantai Raffles Shipyard. The Yantai-built SSP 300s will be deployed by its customer Petrobras.

This has included the change from 2-D to 3-D CAD, a dramatic increase in the level of usability (example: from batch mode to fancy 3-D GUI's) and increased functionality within the tools themselves. With the development of these tools has also come improved integration of the CAD and CAM data. While 2-D CAD drawings were originally entered into the CAM system manually, it has now become commonplace to utilize a fully integrated product model environment from vendors such as Dassault Systems (Catia), Intergraph (ISDP), Nupas-Cadmatic, Sener (Foran) and Tribon Solutions (Tribon M1).
