NAVSEA Dahlgren Develops Helpful Device
NAVSEA Dalgren?s Coastal Systems Station (CCS) has developed a hands free communications device. This device could produce life saving results for the individual firefighter who would have an improved ability to communicate in high noise situations. The head contact microphone, usually mounted into the headband of a hat or helmet, transmits spoken words from the wearer through physical contact of a transducer with the human cranium. The device has the ability to reject external noise in excess of 100 decibels. The technology is simple and should be affordable when mass-produced. NAVSEA Warfare Centers Realign
As part of the Naval Sea Systems Command's efforts to become more efficient throughout the organization, the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) are being realigned. This will allow the centers to operate across organizational boundaries and respond more quickly and effectively to the needs of the Fleet. The realignment is the result of NAVSEA's focus to support Sea Power 21 and the Chief of Naval Operations' unique challenge to NAVSEA's leadership to find ways to become more efficient and effective. This new concept of operations for the warfare centers will do that, and it will also improve the credibility and standing of the warfare centers within the Navy and meet Navy cost-savings targets. NAVSEA Awards Contract for Fifth San Antonio-Class Ship
Naval Sea Systems Command recently awarded Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Avondale Operations, New Orleans a $171,050,850 contract modification to a previous contract for long-lead time materials for the fifth San Antonio-class ship, LPD 21. 2003. The Shipbuilding Construction (SCN) contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships will be used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked landing craft or amphibious vehicles augmented by helicopters in amphibious assault. NAVSEA Technicians Locate Lost Fishing Vessel
Technical specialists with NAVSEA's Naval Underwater Warfare Division, Keyport recently helped the U.S. Coast Guard to locate the sunken fishing vessel Arctic Rose that disappeared in the Bering Sea on April 2, with all 15 crew members aboard. Three Keyport personnel recently returned after completing a project supporting the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS). The technicians returned from 42 days in the Bering Sea and Bristol Bay, Alaska where they conducted a Side Scan Sonar survey to examine the effects of commercial trawling equipment on the sea floor for the NMFS. The survey work was conducted aboard the fishing vessel Ocean Explorer. At the request of the U.S Coast Guard, the trip was extended their trip to support efforts to locate the Arctic Rose.
