The Port of Gdynia Authority (PGA) in Poland has recently launched a formal procedure to select a private partner for the construction of the outer port in the Port of Gdynia.The project is a strategic investment of the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A., and is enlisted in the Polish government’s Seaports Development Program. The outer port development project, which is being prepared as a public-private partnership, consists of the construction of a new deep-water container terminal with an annual transshipment capacity of 2.5 million TEU.

Governor Terry R. McAuliffe on Wednesday announced that The Port of Virginia has signed a new, long-term lease for Virginia International Gateway (VIG) that clears the way for the port to begin work on doubling capacity at the deep-water container terminal. “This is an historic event for The Port of Virginia,” Gov. McAuliffe said. The new lease, which was negotiated during a two-year period, will give the port oversight of and operating rights at the terminal until 2065. Further, the lease allows the port to begin work on a $320 million project to build the terminal’s second phase; construction will begin this year. British ports could gain a competitive edge in tough shipping markets through post-Brexit exclusion from planned European Union regulation of the sector, leading British port officials told Reuters. Last month's vote to leave the EU means that British terminals are set to escape the proposed Ports Services Regulation that critics have said would hit UK ports unfairly because most are privately funded, while many of their European counterparts receive financing from local authorities. The mooted EU-wide rules cover port services such as piloting but also include port charges and exemptions for state aid, which would add to cost pressure on UK operators while eroding their ability to control prices. The first six cantilever rail-mounted gantry (CRMG) cranes arrived in the River Mersey on Sunday, May 1 ready for installing and commissioning at the Liverpool2 deep-water container terminal. Produced by leading Chinese manufacturer ZPMC, which also supplied the five ship-to-shore cranes already on site, these six are the first of 12 required for phase 1 of the terminal. Peel Ports, one of Britain's largest port operators, expects to withstand the container shipping slump with a bold project aimed at attracting cargo to Liverpool away from southern gateways, its chief executive said. The container market, which ships retail goods from iPhones to designer clothes and food products, has been hit hard by a slowdown in demand for goods from Asia, especially China. The Baltic exchange's main sea freight index, which gauges the cost of shipping dry bulk commodities such as coal, has fallen to the lowest level since data is available on the China slowdown. China Communications Construction Co. Ltd (CCCC). has agreed to build a highly automated container terminal in Sydney Harbour, depending on the results of a feasibility study to be conducted next year. Albert Barbusci, CEO of Harbor Port Development Partners (HDP), said that his company, which has the exclusive right to market the port of Sydney, has signed a deal with China Communications Construction Company related to the design, construction and ownership of a deep-water container terminal in Sydney. It’s expected the multi-year development of the port will cost more than $1 billion. HDP also says discussions are underway on a potential equity stake in the project by the Chinese firm.

As the shipping operator BG Freight Line is set for a new freight service connecting the links, Scotland’s food and drink, chemical and manufacturing industries are looking for a boost. A ground-breaking ceremony was held at DP World’s London Gateway Logistics Park to mark the start of construction on a 316,000 square foot distribution facility. Adani Ports has acquired an interest in Dhamra Port, situated between the major ports of Haldia and Paradip. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone recently announced the much-anticipated acquisition of Dhamra Port Company Limited (DPCL), a joint and equal ownership by Larsen and Toubro and Tata Steel. DPCL is a concessionaire at Dhamra Port (in the state of Odisha on the east coast of India) and has been entrusted with the responsibility of building and operating a multi-user, multi-cargo port. DPCL holds a 34-year concession which can be renewed for two additional 10-year periods. Adani Port reportedly had been awaiting environmental clearances (received early this year) for Phase 2 expansion at the port and has also been serving as management consultants to the port.

CMA CGM has backed Peel Ports’ £300m Liverpool2 development by doubling the frequency of its feeder service to the port. CMA CGM now offers twice-weekly calls in Liverpool from its hub in Le Havre, France and a new weekly call at Greenock, Scotland and Cork, Ireland. Weekly calls to Dublin and Belfast were already established. The company’s expansion into Liverpool will take advantage of Peel Ports’ established Green Highway Network, a shuttle service which carries freight 44 miles inland using the Manchester Ship Canal.

Work on Liverpool2, a new terminal at the Port of LIverpool, has begun. More than one million cubic meters of material will now be moved by dredgers to clear a deep-water channel at the Port of Liverpool (United Kingdom), operated by Peel Ports. The dredging work – funded by a £35 million U.K. Government Regional Growth Fund grant – will create a 16.5-meter deep berthing pocket to secure access to the developing Liverpool2 project. This funding was awarded to the Mersey Docks and Harbor Company by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne last month (May 2013).

Navis, a division of Cargotec Corporation, has announced that Deep Water Container Terminal (DCT) Gdansk in Poland is implementing Navis SPARCS N4. The terminal operating system (TOS), scheduled to go live in the fourth quarter of 2011, should allow DCT Gdansk to support rapid terminal development plans, including increasing container volumes to one million twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2012. Having moved more than 450,000 TEUs in 2010, the terminal plans to increase this to 1.4 million TEUs by 2015 and has potential for up to four million TEUs with future planned development phases. SPARCS N4 will allow DCT Gdansk to support planning and equipment control operations with increased throughput and multiple vessel berthing.
