The provider of passenger and freight maritime transportation Onorato Armatori has signed a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for the order of two plus two RoPax ferries, designed by Danish naval architects, OSK-ShipTech.The contract was just signed at a ceremony in Beijing. Onorato Armatori is behind the RoPax ferries to be built at Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shipyard International. The Liberian Registry has signed a framework cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the China Classification Society (CCS) as the latest step in its strategy to collaborate with long-term key industry stakeholders.Under the terms of the MoU, the Liberian Registry’s technical competence will be employed to help shipyards and shipowners improve their innovative strategies. Jörg Beiderbeck, recognized as a figure among the world’s top megayacht designers, has passed away at the age of 69 on the evening of Sunday, August 2, at his home in Bremen-Vegesack, after a long illness. He leaves behind his long-term partner as well as a son and a daughter. beiderbeck designs GmbH has lost not only the man who gave it its name, but one of its four partners. As a megayacht designer, Beiderbeck enjoyed worldwide respect and recognition from owners, shipyards and among his colleagues. "It’s not only beiderbeck designs that is grieving.

Robert De Hoyos has joined WPT Power Corporation as the company’s new engineering manager, bringing to the post 21 years of manufacturing experience as a mechanical engineer.   De Hoyos’ expertise is in new product design, drawing and routing as well as traditional engineering department functions. He has taught mechanical design (Solidworks and Auto CAD) classes at Midwestern State University and training courses in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). Most recently, he was a mechanical engineer for Magic Aire, United Electric Company. Prior to that, he was chief engineer at Washex Manufacturing overseeing production and R&D design projects.

Chesapeake Shipbuilding of Salisbury, Md., is expanding its design department and is actively seeking two naval architects and one marine engineer to add to its design team.   The design office provides engineering and technical support for the company’s newbuild program and fleet operations. Chesapeake Shipbuilding’s design team undertakes design projects from conceptual design to detailed practical design and commissioning.

Seattle-based naval architecture consultancy Glosten has joined the list of North American companies utilizing Nupas-Cadmatic, a CAD/CAM engineering software system for the marine and offshore industry. Glosten will utilize the software to complete the detail design of Vigor’s Alaska Class Ferry, a two-vessel project at their Ketchikan Alaska shipyard. Glosten said a few features of Nupas-Cadmatic made it the best choice for the naval architecture firm. Firstly, the tool was developed in conjunction with world-class shipyards and incorporates the collective experience of a large international user base. Secondly, the tool’s parametric modeling capabilities and embedded shipbuilding resources are a powerful way to reduce design hours.

Gibbs & Cox, Inc., an independent naval architecture and marine engineering firm, announced the appointment of Mr. Benedict P. Capuco as Chief Naval Architect. In this role, Capuco will provide corporate leadership to the company's naval architecture and marine engineering capabilities and solutions across the Gibbs & Cox global portfolio. Prior to this appointment, Capuco served as Vice President and Group Manager of the Platform Solutions Group of Gibbs & Cox, leading full ship design projects including commercial projects, foreign navy projects, and U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard projects, most notably the FREEDOM Class Littoral Combat Ship and the Offshore Patrol Cutter.

There’s a new designer in the driving seat at Alu Design. Per Ivar Selvaag, the former Lead Designer at BMW Group and Chief Designer of Peugeot’s concept car division, has signed an agreement with the Kristiansand, Norway-based company to design its marine pilot and operator chairs. In what Alu Design CEO Einar Ulrichsen describes as “a huge coup for the business”, Selvaag and his team at San Francisco-based Montaag have agreed to work on the firm’s molded aluminum chairs on an ongoing project-by-project basis. As part of the deal, Montaag will not design marine chairs for any other manufacturer. “This is an incredible development,” said Ulrichsen.

That’s because Kunkel, President of Alternative Marine Technologies, previously served as the Federal Chairman of the Short Sea Shipping Cooperative Program under the Maritime Administration and Department of Transportation from 2003 until 2008.
