Canadian Icebreaker's Thordon Bearings Stand the Test of Time

A Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) icebreaker is helping to keep shipping moving on the Great Lakes throughout the winter with a set of Thordon Bearings’ propeller shaft bearings that were fitted more than 30 years ago.Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Griffon, the oldest vessel of the CCG’s Type 1100 series, was retrofitted with a set of four Thordon XL polymer stave bearings in 1990, 20 years into her service life. Sister ships received Thordon bearings from new throughout the 1980s.

Cox’s Diesel Outboard Enters Production

UK-based engine manufacturer Cox Powertrain said its purpose-designed 300hp CXO300 diesel outboard engine has entered production following several years of development and testing.Production will commence in Cox Powertrain’s headquarters and assembly and test facilities in Shoreham, West Sussex UK. Solar Solve Wins 40-Ship Order from S.Korea

The UK-based manufacturer of sunscreens for navigation bridge windows scored order for SOLASAFE anti-glare roller sunscreens that will be installed on 40 vessels that are being built in South Korea during 2019.The Type Approved screens will be fitted at the navigation bridge windows to protect ship’s personnel from heat, glare and uv light that is radiated by the sun to create a safer and more comfortable working environment.Included in the order is a series of 14 massive VLCC 320,000 tons deadweight oil tankers that will be 336 mts long, 60mts beam and 29.5mts depth, that are all being constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilders. Oil-to-water Conversions Success for Great Lakes Bulkers

The oil-to-water lubricated tailshaft conversion Thordon Bearings carried out last year to the 26,260dwt Great Lakes Fleet-managed bulk carrier SS John G. Munson has successfully completed its first season as a diesel-powered ship.The shaft conversion of the 1952-built self-unloader formed a key part of the mammoth 12-month power conversion project completed last year by Fincantieri’s Bay Shipbuilding yard, in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, U.S.The vessel’s steam propulsion plant was replaced with an energy efficient medium-speed diesel arrangement.

New Controls, Display Systems for CXO300 Outboard

British company Cox Powertrain said it will announce two exclusive new partnerships at this year’s Seawork International and showcase the engine control and display systems that have been chosen for the company’s high powered diesel outboard engine, the CXO300, ahead of its launch next year. Italian controls specialist Xenta Systems has been chosen to supply the engine controls system, which incorporates the joystick, throttle for the CXO300. Murphy by Enovation Controls will supply its new PowerView1200 display screen offering full-featured engine diagnostics on a powerful display screen.

Kineteco International, a U.K. spring starter manufacturer, appointed a new European and Russian distributor to push export sales. Global offshore crane manufacturer Sormec has supplied matching cranes for a Dutch-built vessel operating in one of Nigeria's largest deepwater oil fields. The Italian firm was tasked with manufacturing two M350/EL hydraulic elbow knuckle-boom marine cranes to be equipped aboard an offshore supply vessel (OSV) for the Awaritse Nigeria Ltd vessel Prince Job I, now based in Chevron’s Agbami Field, one of Nigeria's largest deepwater discoveries. The Sicilian company supplied the cranes for the 69-meter-long OSV which was built at the DeHoop Shipyard in Rotterdam.

Danelec Receives VDR Orders from Italy, the Netherlands

Danelec Marine, a supplier of marine Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs), announced that it has received VDR retrofit orders from its distributors in Italy and the Netherlands. Telemar SpA has taken orders for 11 Danelec DM400 VDRs from Italian shipowner Tirrenia, replacing the existing VDRs on its fleet of passenger and cargo ships’ operating on routes in the Mediterranean. Founded in Naples in 1936, Tirrenia was acquired by Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione on July 19, 2012. Telemar was founded in 1947, and is one of the world’s largest international managed satellite service and navcom maintenance providers with 14 operating companies in 12 countries. Aage Hempel, distributor for Danelec Marine in the Netherlands, is supplying VDRs for eight dry cargo ships operated by Feederlines.
