Svitzer has named its new ASD tug Svitzer Adira, an 80 metric ton bollard pull vessel built by Sanmar at a ceremony in the Port of Southampton. The naming-giving ceremony took place on board the Princess Caroline cruising the Southampton harbor with attendance of Managing Director of Svitzer Europe Kasper Nilaus and Adira’s Godmother Andry Waterman. Svitzer Adira, a RAstar 2800 built by Sanmar in Turkey, will serve in the port of Southampton as part of Svitzer’s fleet of five modern tugs ranging from 60-80 TBP including a variety of propulsions making it a very flexible fleet.

The Harvey Stone is a Multi-Purpose Field Support Vessel (MPFSV) that will serve as a dedicated field support vessel for the Shell Stones FPSO offshore terminal. Her primary duties will be to operate as the dedicated pull-back tug, in support of, and assisting the berthing, loading and unberthing of offtake tankers of up to 46,287 SDWT. The vessel is expected to escort the above FPSO in the event of disconnection from the submerged buoy mooring for hurricane avoidance purposes…

On October 28th, 2016 the Ocean Group Inc. of Quebec City, Canada took delivery of the 6000 kW ASD tug Ocean Taiga. This icebreaking escort tug joins her sister Ocean Tundra as some of the most powerful tugs in the Canadian registry, part of a new generation of extremely capable tugs, which will provide the highest degree of year-round escort towing capability to Canada’s East Coast and the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Ocean Taiga is the latest addition and a sister tug of the previously delivered Ocean Tundra to the TundRA 3600 series (with a nominal 100 tonnes Bollard Pull) of icebreaking tugs designed by Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver B.C. This tug was built to the highest standards at Ocean’s own shipyard, Ocean Industries, on Iles aux Coudres, Quebec.

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. introduced its new 120-foot, 4,200-horsepower Inland Towboat design, THUNDERBOLT, combining twin electric V-Pod propulsion and diesel-electric technology for what the builder calls its “vision of the future for the U.S. Eastern said the idea for the THUNDERBOLT came from across the aisle conversations at the 2013 International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans. On the rivers, thruster propulsion systems are starting to get noticed and are outperforming conventional nozzle propeller propulsion systems with main/flanking rudder steering. Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. and Verhaar Omega, B.V. began discussions and realized they were driving towards a more refined towboat thruster propulsion system design.

Keppel Singmarine BrasilLtda. (KSMB), of Navegantes, Brazil has recently completed the construction of the SMIT Panará, the third of a series of six Robert Allan Ltd. designed RAmparts 2500 tugs, for SMIT Rebocadores do Brasil (Rebras), of Rio de Janeiro. The SMIT Panará was delivered in May of 2014, and follows its sisters, the SMIT Pataxóand the SMIT Pareci. The RAmparts Series is a standardized Z-drive tug design which was developed from a prototype vessel and refined to emphasize ease of construction and owners’ specific requirements.

BOGAZICI A.S. of Turkey have recently delivered Amapola 1, the first Robert Allan Ltd. designed RAstar 3000 tug, to International Offshore Engineering and Development Company, Panama for PDVSA of Venezuela. This new design rounds out the RAstar family of Terminal / Escort tugs, which to date encompasses lengths from 27m to 39m and bollard pulls of up 120 tonnes. The RAstar Class are a series of well-proven, high performance ASD terminal support tug designs developed for berthing and unberthing large ships, particularly tankers, at exposed terminals. They provide a high standard of tanker escort capability, emergency response, fire-fighting and oil recovery capabilities in the vicinity of oil and LNG terminals, and in sensitive environments.

On December 13, 2013 the 6,000 kW ASD tug Ocean Tundra was commissioned into service for its Owners, Ocean Group Inc. (Ocean) of Quebec City, Canada. Robert Allan Ltd. has designed a new generation of more capable High Endurance Self-righting Search & Rescue Lifeboats for the Canadian Coast Guard. This new design was developed from the successful similar vessels known as the “Severn” Class operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) of the United Kingdom. The new Canadian design is larger with a greater range than the RNLI vessel and has been specifically designed to handle the worst weather encountered year around in the waters off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

The Pilbara Apollo, the latest addition to the RAstar 3200 escort tug series was delivered to its owners, Rio Tinto Ltd., earlier this year. The vessel was constructed at Uzmar Shipbuilding Industry Co. in Turkey and will operate at Rio Tinto’s iron ore export facilities at Cape Lambert (Port Walcott) and Dampier, Australia. The Pilbara Apollo is the first of six new RAstar 3200 tugs to be delivered to Rio Tinto as part of this contract. The tugs will assist very large ore carriers in berthing and un-berthing at exposed, open water berths in severe wind and wave conditions.

The Ulupinar Series of compact ASD tugs has proven to be a very successful part of Sanmar’s portfolio, with 14 vessels in service; the first one delivered in 2007. After five years, the Sanmar board decided that some updates were needed and Robert Allan Ltd. was contracted to provide an updated design that would keep this compact tug at the forefront of the modern tug world. Minor cosmetic changes brought the look to a more modern standard, and improved outfit materials and method have increased crew comfort and livability, but the real changes were “under the hood”.

The CCGS Vladykov is the first of three new Near-Shore Fisheries Research Vessels to be delivered to the Canadian Coast Guard. Commissioned in August 2012, the vessel was constructed at Meridien Maritime Inc. in Matane, Quebec to a design developed by Robert Allan Ltd of Vancouver, B.C. The CCGS Vladykov and its sister vessels will conduct scientific research in the Newfoundland and Labrador region. Secondary missions include search and rescue, environmental response and the support of marine programs for other government agencies.

Kvaerner Masa-Yards has delivered the $375 million, 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle, to Carnival Cruise Lines - its 20th Fun Ship - in the traditional handover ceremonies in Helsinki. For anyone who has ever had the privilege to attend such a delivery, seeing a new cruise ship rolled out in the middle of the Finnish winter is truly an awe-inspiring, if not one of the most ironic, sights. However, it is a testament to accrued cruise industry expertise and a stable infrastructure of equipment and system suppliers that keeps the shipyard at the forefront. Carnival Miracle is the sixth cruise ship in the Spirit class series of new Panamax-size cruise ships for Carnival Cruise Lines (four ships) and Costa Crociere (two ships).

In a recent report, the energy & marine industry analysts Douglas-Westwood, has revealed that operations of cable controlled work-class remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) is a business worth $600 million worldwide and this is forecast to grow to $725 million by 2008. The firm reported these results in ‘The World AUV & ROV Report,’ a new global business study published. In his keynote address to delegates at the 'Advances in Technology for Underwater Vehicles' conference in London, DWL's John Westwood said he expected this growth to mainly come from the oil & gas sector as increasing demand raises ROV utilization and day rates.

While the recent high-profile problems of the western oil majors’ adventures in Russia have occupied the attention of politicians, the giant Russian oilfield services industry continues to work delivering the products and services that produce the oil. Speaking at conferences in both London and St. Petersburg, executives from energy analysts Douglas-Westwood (DWL) outlined the scale of the opportunities available to investors. John Westwood, DWL managing director speaking at the SubseaTECH 2007 Conference in St. Addressing members of the Energy Institute in London, DWL’s assistant director Steve Robertson stated that, “the oilfield services industry has evolved rapidly in recent years, driven by operators’ increasing use of outsourced services and a move to Western business models.

MS Carnival Legend, newbuilding no. 501, was delivered to Carnival Corporation at Kvaerner Masa-Yards' Helsinki shipyard this past August. Legend is the fourth cruise ship in a series of new Panamax-Max size cruise ships under construction for Carnival Corporation and operated by Carnival Cruise Lines and Costa Crociere. The first ship in the series, Costa Atlantica, was delivered in June 2000, and the sisterships Carnival Spirit and Carnival Pride in 2001. Measuring 960 ft. (292.5 m) with a maximum breadth of 127 ft. (38.8 m), a breadth of 106 ft. (32.2 m) and a draft of 25 ft. (7.8 m), Carnival Legend entered service August 21 with a three-day cruise from Harwich, U.K. to Amsterdam.

Diversified Marine, Inc. completed three Ala Wai Dump Scows for American Marine Corporation of Honolulu, Hawaii in June 2002. All three scows were built in Portland, Ore. at the Diversified Marine location and towed to Hawaii on barges. Each scow is built with a remote, air driven hydraulically operated control and with certified leak proof rubber seals. American Marine will use the scows for hauling dredged material from the Hawaiian Island waterways. The Glosten Associates, Inc. designed the scows. Length, molded 78.6 ft.
