The international ship owning and chartering company Ship Finance International (SFL) announced that it has agreed to acquire three 300,000 dwt crude oil carriers, or VLCCs, currently under construction at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in Korea.The Bermuda-headquartered company said that the net purchase price will be $180 million, or $60 million per vessel and they are expected to be delivered to SFL within the next two months.The vessels were ordered in 2018 by affiliates of the Norwegian listed company Hunter Group, and have all the latest eco-design features, including exhaust gas cleaning systems. South Korean shipyard Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (Sungdong) has won an order from Greece’s Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) for two 74,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) crude-oil carriers with an option for two more. TEN has already ordered three tankers from Sungdong. The total value of the contract for the four LR1 tankers could reach up to USD 170 million. Delivery of the firm ship is due in the first half of 2018. Tsakos’s commitment is a massive boost for Sungdong after a tough period of instability and restructuring where the yard skirted with closure. Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited is a provider of international seaborne crude oil and petroleum product transportation services.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI) has welcomed Governor Corbett back for an update on the state of the shipyard and a tour to view progress on the current tankers APSI is building for SeaRiver Maritime. The last time Governor Corbett visited APSI was in September 2011 for the contract signing of the very same tanker program. Since Governor Corbett’s initial visit, the yard has reached its steady state employment of over 1,000 employees and has a backlog secured out Q3 2016, with two tankers for SeaRiver Maritime, Inc. underway and four product tankers for Crowley behind them.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard delivers its first Veteran-class MT-46 product tanker to Crowley Maritime Corp. This is the thirteenth product tanker that the shipyard has completed and the seventeenth vessel overall. The product tankers are 600 feet long and have a cargo capacity of 46,000 dwt. The ship is named the Pennsylvania and is the first vessel that AKPS has delivered to Crowley. As stated in AKPS’s release on 21 August, 2012, Crowley will also take delivery of the next product tanker, Hull 018, when it is completed in February 2013.

Polar Tankers, Inc. is set to unveil its third state-of-the-art Endeavour Class double-hulled tanker, the POLAR DISCOVERY, during a christening ceremony on Saturday, April 13, at the Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Avondale shipyard in New Orleans. Phillips Petroleum Company, parent of Polar Tankers, is building five Endeavour Class tankers. The contract cost of the POLAR DISCOVERY is valued at $168 million. The Endeavour Class tankers, also known as the Millennium Class, are the first crude-oil carriers being built for the Alaska trade in compliance with the federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990. The first tanker, the POLAR ENDEAVOUR, arrived in Valdez, Alaska, on its maiden voyage in July 2001. The new POLAR DISCOVERY tanker will join the Polar Tankers fleet in 2003.

Attuned to the liner shipping industry's unerring drive for economies of scale, classification society Lloyd's Register (LR) has developed a conceptual design of container vessel incorporating a 12,500-TEU capacity. Although some 55-60 percent greater in slot capacity than the biggest cellular vessels ordered to date, the envisaged Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS) would be able to transit the Suez Canal and access key ports. LR considers that there are no insurmountable technical challenges to vessels of 12,500 TEU, and believes that it is only a matter of time before such tonnage makes its appearance in deep sea trade. The next five to 10 years could see the uptake of the envisaged new breed of behemoths by the container shipping industry.

Litton Industries Inc. said Polar Tankers Inc. has exercised an option for a fourth double-hull crude oil carrier, valued at $197 million, to ship Alaskan crude oil. Under a contract awarded in 1997, Litton's Avondale Industries Inc. subsidiary has three 125,000 DWT crude oil carriers under construction. Delivery of the first ship is scheduled for January 2001. Long Beach, Calif.-based Polar Tankers, a subsidiary of Phillips Petroleum Co., Polar Tankers has an option with Litton Avondale for a fifth ship which could be exercised in the first quarter of calendar year 2001. The Millennium Class "next generation" tankers being built at Litton Avondale are the first new crude-oil carriers being built for the Alaskan trade in compliance with the Federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990.
