Inland Shipping Expands in India

Integrated cargo transport along multiple waterways begins in India from the banks of Rupnarayan to the shores of Ganga. V. V. Giri, a vessel of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) began a landmark pilot movement on April 23, 2017 from Kolaghat in East Midnapore district of West Bengal to Bhagalpur in Bihar with a cement consignment of 240 metric tons. The vessel's journey commenced from Kolaghat on Rupnarayan river (National Waterway- 86) to reach Bhagalpur via river Ganga (NW-1). This marks the beginning of an integrated cargo movement involving two different NWs - NW-86 and NW-1. Rupnarayan river (NW-86) connects with river Ganga (NW-1) at Geokhali near Haldia. On its return trip, the vessel will bring fly ash/pet coke.

Indian Navy's New Warship Runs Aground

The 'INS Kamorta', the first in a class of Indian Navy's ambitious Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Corvettes, under construction at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) shipyard ran aground on in the River Hooghly near Geonkhali in East Midnapore, while on sea trials, reports 'The Times of India'. Citing Navy officers, the newspaper reports that as the ship was negotiating the bends and bars of the Hooghly, its engines seem to have failed. Its steering gear also got jammed and it moved away from the navigation channel and got grounded near the shore at Geonkhali.

Jessop to Eyes Shipbuilding Project in Haldia

Jessop, a company of the Ruia Group, is planning to invest about $268m in West Bengal to set up a shipbuilding and repairing project and a coach manufacturing unit for underground railway systems. The group is also contemplating a public offering of Jessop, which in turn could be used to part finance the shipbuilding project at Haldia in East Midnapore district, said Pawan Ruia, chairman of Ruia Group. The group would invest close to $214m in shipbuilding activities and the remaining $53.5m would be towards a metro coach manufacturing facility. The company has already applied to the state government for 1,500-acre land for setting up a dry dock for ship manufacturing in Haldia.

German Group Eyes Shipbuilding Investment

A group of German companies is exploring the possibility of setting up a shipbuilding and shipyard project in West Bengal with special emphasis at the port city of Haldia in East Midnapore district. Representing the group of companies and its desire to do business here, H & F Consultants GmbH and Company Managing Director Frithjof Hennemann today called on the Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee at the state secretariat here. Hennemann, who was accompanied by two officials, also told Bhattacharjee that they were keen on initiating a survey in this regard and were ready to make necessary investment for the purpose. Bhattacharjee welcomed the proposal and agreed to extend all cooperation to the German group.

A group of German companies is exploring the possibility of setting up a shipbuilding and shipyard project in West Bengal with special emphashis at the port city of Haldia in East Midnapore district.
