Classification Leaders Weigh in on Marine Propulsion

When talk turns to marine propulsion and the host of surrounding topics – emissions, efficiency, fuel consumption – we turn to class for answers. While there are just two questions, the ensuing answers from leaders at ABS, BV, ClassNK, DNV GL, LR and RINA are voluminous & enlightening. The stricter environmental regulations and rising fuel costs lead to technology development in design, size, propulsion and operations. This goes well beyond LNG as fuel, and we believe we will see a more diversified mix, with batteries, hybrids, methanol and so on.

IACS Renews Call for Evidence-based EEDI Database

Chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Roberto Cazzulo, speaking at the IMO World Maritime Day Symposium on 'Sustainable Maritime Transportation System', noted that IMO had recently supported in principle his organization's proposal for establishing an (Energy Efficient Design Index) "EEDI Database" for new ships being constructed in accordance with new IMO GHG regulations. In a detailed paper Mr Cazzulo observed that action by IMO on climate change would lead to significant emission reductions, between 9 and 16% in 2020 and between 17 and 25% by 2030 compared with current practice. IACS Chairman Calls for Evidence-Based Ship Efficiency Assessments

Roberto P. Cazzulo, Chairman of the IACS Council and of RINA Services S.p.A., speaking at the IMO World Maritime Day Symposium on Sustainable Maritime Transportations System, noted that IMO had recently supported in principle an IACS proposal for establishing an (Energy Efficient Design Index) “EEDI Database” for new ships being constructed in accordance with new IMO GHG regulations. “This will create an evidence base on which to judge the success of the regulations and to help design more efficient new ships,” he said. In a detailed paper Mr. Roberto Cazzulo also said that “IMO’s SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) may represent the most practical mechanism for monitoring, reporting and verification of GHG emissions, and energy efficiency of existing ships.
