MARAD Awards $20 Million in Shipyard Grants
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) on Monday awarded $19.6 million in grants aiming to help 31 shipyards modernize, increase productivity, and expand local employment opportunities while competing in the global marketplace.The grants were awarded to shipbuilding and repair yards in 15 states throughout the U.S. as part of MARAD's Small Shipyard Grant Program. Since 2008, the program has awarded $262.5 million to nearly 300 shipyards in 32 states and territories.
Beier Purchases South Coast Electric Systems
Beier Integrated Systems (Beier) informs it has purchased South Coast Electric Systems (SCES) from American Electric Technologies (AETI), expanding the its manufacturing capabilities in the marine market. Beier said it will acquire SCES’s operations, including a manufacturing plant and equipment in Bay St. Louis, Miss, and will add 13 employees of the South Coast Electric operation to its team. SCES, a marine and industrial electrical switchgear manufacturer and service provider, has been in business for 14 years. MARAD $14.7M in Grants for Small Shipyards
On April 15, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced $14.7m in grant awards to help improve 17 small shipyards in 16 states. The funds will help these shipyards become more competitive by purchasing modern equipment and training workers. “These grants will help modernize small shipyards and strengthen our economy by making sure we maintain the ability to build and repair ships in the United States,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Small shipyards are an important part of our nation’s shipbuilding industry,” said David Matsuda, Acting Maritime Administrator. PFI Marine Electric in Dutch Harbor Year Round
Pacific Fishermen Shipyard and Electric, LLC (PFI Marine Electric) announced that it will now be providing year round marine electrical services in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, as well as the Puget Sound area, maintaining marine electricians on site 24/7. Seattle’s PFI Marine Electric shares facilities with Dutch Harbor’s Lunde Marine Electronics to provide marine electrical services in Alaska along with Lunde Marine’s electronic services. The PFI Marine Electrical service will now be expanded to year-round, 24/7 coverage of not only season openers, but now for off season repair periods as well. Operations will expand at the store and shop facilities shared by the two independent companies at 1558 East Point Road in Dutch Harbor.
PFI Marine Electric, Eltech Electric Partnership
Pacific Fishermen Shipyard and Electric LLC announced that it has agreed to sell its marine electrical operation, PFI Marine Electric, to a new company owned by the manager of the business, James Kaldestad, and George Hancock, owner of Eltech Electric Inc, another Seattle-based marine electrical contractor. Kaldestad will be President of PFI Marine Electric LLC, which will continue to operate at the Pacific Fishermen Shipyard in Ballard, Seattle and at Dutch Harbor, Alaska. All current employees will have the option to transfer their employment to the new company. Kaldestad has also been appointed President of Eltech Electric Inc. He will manage both operations to provide a full range of marine electrical contracting services to its customers in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
