NMEA Names Furuno ‘Best Radar’ for 40th Year

Road Show Scouts Female Submariners
Capt. Rod Hutton, deputy commander for the Enlisted Women in Submarines Task Force, led the Enlisted Women in Submarines Road Show to different military bases in the San Diego area Feb. 9-11. The road show is spreading the word that the submarine force is now open to female enlisted Sailors from E-1 to E-8. Speakers discussed how junior female Sailors could convert to rates in the submarine force and the type of candidates the force is seeking. In addition, they provided an insight of the lifestyle aboard submarines. "Up until 21 January all the enlisted billets in the submarine force were previously closed to women," said Hutton. Currently, more than 60 female officers are serving throughout the Navy's 76 submarines.
Furuno Makes Clean Sweep of NMEA Awards
Over the past 43 years, Furuno has received the honor of being the most recognized company in the marine electronics field by the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA). This year, Furuno won four more NMEA awards at the prestigious 2014 NMEA Convention in Sanibel, FL, bringing Furuno’s NMEA Award all-time total to an amazing 212 wins. For the ninth consecutive year, Furuno received the highly coveted Manufacturer of the Year - Support award. Austal Opens Washington Office
Providing local support to Navy customer. Austal has announced the opening of Austal USA’s Washington DC Operations Office at 100 M Street, SE, Suite 310. The facility will allow Austal Government Programs and Business Development personnel to use the location as a base of Washington DC operations. The new Washington office director, Mr. Ronald Mahaffey, is a veteran of Huntington-Ingalls Shipbuilding, where he served as Director of Surface Combatant Operations. Prior to that assignment, Ron spent nearly 14 years in the post-delivery environment, working in the Ingalls Planning Yard on both the DD 963 and CG 47 programs. Ron retired from the Navy in 1989 as a Chief Warrant Officer (CWO4) with over 30 years of expertise in the electronics field.
Calabrese Joins JRC
Al Calabrese has joined the staff at JRC in their High Seas sales department overseeing the Gulf Region and Florida. He brings over 40 years of electronics experience, and is FCC certified, with a technical background in troubleshooting, research and development, failure analysis, production methods as well as marine electronics communication and navigation sales, service, and installation. Most recently, he worked as East Coast Manager of Sales and Service for GSI Marine, Inc responsible for training and supervision of technical personnel and day-to-day operations.
