Dongara Marine Delivers Ferry in Western Australia
Placing a board deck across two canoes, to make a broad flat and stable surface for transporting passengers and freight, was often done to form early ferries. The true catamaran is an evolution of that practical design concept. In recent decades, Australia has led in the development of all shapes and sizes for aluminum catamaran ferries.In December 2019, Dongara Marine of Port Denison delivered a very practical 148-seat, 24- by 5.5-meter ferry to Western Australia’s Public Transport Authority.
New Cat Ferry MV Tricia for Transperth Fleet
A new passenger ferry built by Dongara Marine has been introduced to the public transport system in Perth, Western Australia. MV Tricia - named after Perth Zoo's popular 62-year-old Asian Elephant - is the third ferry in the Transperth fleet, joining two other low-wash catamarans introduced in 1997 and 2009. Operating across the Swan River between Elizabeth Quay and South Perth, the 23.7-m aluminium catamaran can carry up to 148 passengers and has a loaded top speed in excess of 16 knots.With two ferries each providing departures every 15 minutes in peak periods…
P&O Unit Reports Rise In Container Traffic
Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co.'s Sri Lanka unit reported a sharp increase in container handling in its first year of operation to August 2000. "In just 12 months, productivity levels have doubled and South Asia Gateway Terminal Pvt Ltd (SAGT) has handled 261,787 20-foot equivalent units.... a 40,682 teu increase over the year before period," SAGT said. "... SAGT is 52.5 percent owned by units of Britain's P&O and Sri Lankan conglomerate John Keells Holdings Ltd. SAGT last September took possession of the Colombo port's Queen Elizabeth Quay in a $240 million deal for a new breakwater. It also agreed to build a new passenger terminal. The group plans to raise annual handling capacity to 1.1 million containers in 2003.
