Singapore Picks 11 Proposals to Advance Electric Harbor Craft Designs

Nippon Foundation, DeepStar Launch Joint Decarbonization R&D Program

The Nippon Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the offshore technology development consortium DeepStar to establish a joint research and development program focused on decarbonization in offshore oil and gas, with a focus on renewable energy and the environment.The initial program budget is up to $10 million through 2026, and the overall plan is to develop technologies for commercialization.“I am very pleased that we have been able to conclude this new memorandum of understanding,” said Mr. Sasakawa.

World's Longest Wind Turbine Blade Debuts

Offshore Cape Three Points Begins Gas Delivery to Ghana

Vitol said that the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) integrated oil and gas project offshore Ghana has commenced delivery of gas from the Sankofa field to Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).Both Vitol and GNPC are partners in the OCTP project alongside operator Eni. The offshore project is expected to provide stable supplies of cost effective and environmentally friendly, domestic fuel for the Ghanaian power sector, said Vitol.The estimated net cost of gas to Ghana will be less than $4.5/MMBtu, greatly reducing Ghana’s fuel costs compared to liquid fuels or imported gas.The project will provide approximately 180 MMscf/d for at least 15 years, sufficient to supply half of Ghana’s power generation requirements.

Maersk Ship Plastic Balls as Fruit

Maersk Container Industry (MCI) purchased 116,000 plastic balls for a trial to test & increase the effectiveness of its refrigerated containers in delivering fresh produce. The balls were adapted so they would respire in much the same way as fresh fruit and vegetables do, enabling MCI to assess various improvements to its reefer box service. MCI's container technology manager Lars Lübker explains why the company opted to run such a large trial: "The challenge by transporting fruits and vegetables is that they respire. They are living organisms and they need to be taken special care of. "In order to improve the performance of a container we had to develop a specific artificial fruit. We did that by purchasing 116,000 plastic balls.

Sailboat Water Turbine Doubles Energy Production

ABB Acquires Marine Software Solutions Company Amarcon

ABB, the power and automation technology group, has agreed to acquire Amarcon BV, a Dutch company that develops and markets software solutions for the shipping industry. The acquisition will expand ABB’s advisory systems offering for customers in the maritime sectors. The transaction is expected to be closed in the third quarter of 2012. Amarcon’s product portfolio provides software solutions for ships that focus on safety and improved operational ability. This addition to ABB’s portfolio will enhance the recently released offering of Marine Advisory Systems. Amarcon will join ABB’s Process Automation Division. As energy cost, emissions and ship safety become increasingly important on ships, the need for advisory systems will grow.

USCG Works to Save Energy, Emissions

NAVFAC Begins Installation Process of Wind Turbine

Installation of the Marine Corps' first large scale wind turbine at Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) Barstow began Jan. 8, with a kick-off meeting between Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest, MCLB, and Southern California Edison (SCE). The meeting starts the official implementation of the first of its kind contract awarded to the Marine Corps in November 2007. "The purchase of this wind turbine will allow MCLB Barstow to meet energy conservation and savings requirements established by various federal laws, regulations and directives," said Monica Hernandez, NAVFAC Southwest contract specialist for Special Ventures Acquisition Utilities and Energy Contracting. SECNAV Energy Conservation Awards Announced

The Secretary of the Navy announced the Energy Conservation (ENCON) ship award winners for FY2003. These award winners represent Navy ships who have been singled out for outstanding execution of energy conservation measures and consistent reduction in energy consumption. Energy conservation awards were also announced for Navy shore activities and Marine Corps bases. During FY 2003, Commander, Pacific Fleet (COMPAC) and Commander, Atlantic Fleet (COMLANT) ships, even during this high level operational era, avoided the consumption of many thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity. Using energy education, the Fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships.
