Fairbanks Morse Defense Acquires Welin Lambie

U.S.-based marine defense provider Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) has acquired Welin Lambie, a U.K.-based manufacturer of davits used specifically for the launch and recovery of all types of craft from ships or shore-based installations.The acquisition further expands FMD’s capabilities and service solutions for shipyard, defense and commercial marine customers, including the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Canadian Coast Guard. Fairbanks Morse Defense Acquires Hunt Valve Company, Inc.

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD), a portfolio company of Arcline Investment Management, has acquired Hunt Valve Company Inc., a specialty manufacturer of naval valves and electromechanical actuators. This acquisition expands FMD’s capabilities and service solutions for shipyard, defense, and industrial customers – including its support for and offerings to the U.S. Nuclear Navy.The transaction includes Hunt Valve, the Hunt Valve Actuator Division, MB Valve (Montreal Bronze), and Pima Valve, LLC.“Our core customers value quality, reliability, and convenience, and the addition of Hunt Valve to the Fairbanks Morse Defense brand allows us to enhance the customer experience by offering a wider range of aftermarket support services through a single vendor,” said FMD CEO George Whittier.

Fairbanks Morse Acquires Breco International

Fairbanks Morse acquired Breco International Inc., a diesel engine repair and rebuilding service provider. The move expands service markets for Fairbanks Morse with commercial marine, oil and gas and locomotive, and will add service support for customers.“Breco has an established track record of being customer-focused and operationally efficient and we are pleased to bring the Breco team and assets into Fairbanks Morse,” said George Whittier, CEO of Fairbanks Morse. “This acquisition opens up service markets for Fairbanks Morse and we intend to continue Breco’s business model of providing fast, cost-competitive solutions to customers.”Breco International Inc. is a diesel engine parts and service company specializing in the ALCO brand.

West Calcasieu Port Barge Basin Dredge Work Completed

Dredging operations in the West Calcasieu Port’s west barge basin were completed today and that all tenant operations in the basin have returned to full operations, port officials announced today.Coastal Dredging of Hammond, La., was the contractor on the $1.3 million maintenance dredging project that removed more than 140,000 cubic yards of spoils over a 10-week period. The port’s barge basin depth was returned to a minus-10 feet, and the spoils were relocated into the ports…

Royston Expands UK Engineering Facilities

Royston Diesel Power has doubled the size of its UK engineering facilities to support continuing global growth in its marine engine service business and new technology development. As part of a £500,000 ($676,000) investment program the company has opened an additional 15,000 sq. ft. of engineering workshop premises alongside its existing headquarters on the banks of the River Tyne. As well as increasing the company’s engine repair and maintenance capability, the new center will also provide a focus for a range of other technical support functions.

Liquid Services Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Regional tankerman service Liquid Services, LLC, is celebrating 25 years of operation on the inland waterways. In what started as a mom and pop shop in Paducah, Ky., in 1992, has flourished into a fully licensed, bonded, and dangerous liquid endorsed tankerman service specializing in safe and cost-effective transfer of liquid materials for the marine industry. “We are family owned, and family operated,” said Philip Chapman, owner and operator of Liquid Services. “We always have been. We also treat our employees like family. Grand Bahama Shipyard Stayed Busy in 2016

The Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) worked on 49 commercial vessels and 20 cruise ships throughout 2016, with scope of works ranging from major steel fabrication and repairs, to engine and technical systems overhauls, hull treatment and tank cleanings. And looking to 2017 and beyond, the yard reports it has a healthy order book, with docking periods secured as far ahead as three years. VShips USA brought two bulk carriers, CSL Acadian and CSL Argosy, to GBSL to do tank cleaning on both vessels. CSL Acadian also received extensive pipe work.

West Calcasieu Port to Undergo Waterfront Upgrade

West Calcasieu Port officials have awarded a $1.6 million construction contract to Orion Marine Construction, Inc. for the replacement of bulkheading along the port’s waterfront on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. “The West Cal Port Board of Commissioners was impressed with the strong interest and participation in the highly competitive bidding process on the part of the marine construction industry,” said West Calcasieu Port Director Lynn Hohensee. The bids were formally opened during a special port board meeting earlier in March. “Incorporated in the construction project plan is the replacement of aged, deteriorated bulkhead with new steel bulkhead,” Hohensee explained.

Tauber Oil Company of Houston has become the West Calcasieu Port’s newest tenant. “Tauber Oil is a service-oriented wholesale energy marketing company with a reputation for reliable performance and untarnished character,” said Lynn Hohensee, port director. Tauber Oil becomes the sixth tenant of the port and is providing ultra-low-sulfur diesel to inland marine vessels. This service enhances vessel stops at the port that already provides the following marine services – barge fleeting, wet-barge cleaning and stripping, dry-barge cleaning, marine construction and diesel engine repair.

Rolls Royce Marine Awarded LCS Engine Repair Contract

U.S. Department of Defense informs that Rolls Royce Marine North America, Walpole, Massachusetts, is being awarded a US$9,000,000 firm-fixed-price repair order (N00104-09-G-A755) for the repair of one Marine Trent 30 marine gas turbine engine for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Freedom variant. DoD explains that this contract provides for the repair and overhaul of the Marine Trent 30 marine gas turbine engine, replacement of non-repairable re-assembly to the LCS configuration, and pass-off testing to validate performance. Work will be performed in Bristol, United Kingdom, and is expected to be completed by February 2016. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, District of Columbia, is the contracting activity.

Realistic Engine Simulation

A century ago this year, the first ocean-going diesel ship in the world, the M/S Selandia, embarked on her maiden voyage. She was a technological wonder, and both her hull and engines were built by Burmeister & Wain (B&W) of Copenhagen, Denmark. B&W is now a part of MAN Diesel & Turbo — a company with 12,000 employees worldwide — and the marine low-speed business unit is located in Copenhagen. The unit has capitalized on B&W’s historic expertise to produce new engines that can weigh up to 2,800 metric tons and tower 16 meters high.

Goltens Fast-Fixes Dredger Engines in Oman

Goltens, the US based global engine repair and retrofit expert, overhauls 3 engines from the 'Leonardo Da Vinci', owned by the Jan De Nul Group. The dredger, which has over 20,000 KW installed diesel power, required a full overhaul and reconditioning of its three main engines. Work was carried out at Al Duqm shipyard in Oman and was completed within a demanding schedule of three weeks. This project was part of Goltens’ ongoing cooperation with Denis Diesel Services. The two companies work together on a number of projects, in particular those related to large diesel overhauls on dredgers.

Dubai-based Goltens Worldwide secures Germanischer Lloyd approval for In-situ crankshaft annealing for medium speed 4-stroke diesel engines. This certification follows a formal review by Germanischer Lloyd of the crankshaft annealing process and related governing documents and procedures. The approved procedure is designed to reduce excessive hardness in damaged crankshaft journals through annealing (heat treatment) of the crankshaft with a minimum amount of material removal.

Chinese Shipyard Repairs Large Bulker on Time

The MV Handan Steel is an ore carrier belonging to an English company, size: LOA 330m Breadth 60m. The main engine repair involved   the chemical cleaning of the heat exchanger, M/E air cooler x 2sets, main L/O cooler x 1set, and main & auxiliary atmosphere condenser repair. The deck work scope mainly included No.5 cargo hold bulkhead partial steel renewal, E/R main engine ventilation duct to be cropped and renewed, installation of the limit for aft D/E. The coating work included  SA2 sandblasting for the bulkhead of five cargo holds from 16m high downwards with painting of two F/C, totally 14,630 m2, and the hull (16000m2) to be SA2 sandblasted with painting of two T/C, one F/C. The contracting time was 12 days.

Wärtsilä Acquires Engine Repair and Reconditioning Business

Wärtsilä entered into an agreement to acquire the engine repair and reconditioning business from Metalock Singapore Ltd., at the beginning of the year. This deal has now received the requisite approval of the company's shareholders and authorities. The business will be consolidated in Wärtsilä effective May 20, 2002. The acquisition price is approximately $4.9 million. The business has an annual net sales of $8 million and 87 employees. The acquired business will be called Ciserv Singapore Pte Ltd and it is located in Singapore. It will specialize in repairing and reconditioning marine engines, focusing in particular on low-speed engines in the South East Asian region. Wärtsilä Singapore provides other maintenance services for Wärtsilä's marine and power plant customers.

Wärtsilä Reports 1Q Results

Wärtsilä's reported that net sales for the first quarter increased 17 percent to EUR 580.9 (497.4) million, despite a weakening of the global marine market and nearly non-existent containership business. After the close of the period Wärtsilä paid approximately EUR 350 million for the acquisition of John Crane-Lips. during the first months of the year. quarter in 2001. U.K.-based EJ Bowman has manufactured its range of marine heat exchangers and oil since 1919. The company recently had its range of hydraulic EC to PK shell and tube oil coolers design approved for marine use by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and now hold certificate no. 02-LD302798-PDA. Bowman heat exchangers and oil coolers are suitable for use on engines up to 1,400 kW (1,880 hp) and for gear boxes up to 1,800 kW (2,400 hp). M/V Centurion Del Atlantico Returns after Refurbishment

M/V Centurion Del Atlantico returned to the southern hemisphere after a major refurbishment May 30.
