Joseph Mele Joins MidAtlantic Engineering Partners

Civil, environmental, marine engineering, and surveying firm, MidAtlantic Engineering Partners announced Joseph Mele, P.E., P.P., P.L.S. has joined its team as part of their growth initiative for northern New Jersey and an expansion of services in New York.According to company officials, adding Mele’s strong experience in Hudson, Essex, and Bergen Counties will enable MidAtlantic’s civil engineering, surveying, environmental, and marine engineering services, which clients have engaged throughout northern New Jersey, to become a key focus of growth.

Since joining MidAtlantic, he has successfully led the company’s Marine Services Division. Lewis joined MidAtlantic in February 2017, and since that time has developed and grown the Marine Services Division into a multi-disciplinary infrastructure group providing in-water and waterfront engineering and consulting services including dive services, structural design, permitting oversight, and inspections.

DEME Unveils First SOV for Offshore Wind

Belgium-based offshore wind installation specialist Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV (DEME) has started building its first service operation vessel (SOV), which will be chartered by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) for work at three Belgian offshore wind farms (OWF).Concepted by DEME and further designed in close cooperation with Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam and Marin , this innovative vessel  significantly improves safety, comfort and workability for wind farm technicians even in the roughest sea conditions. Royal IHC Launches TSHD River Thames

Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV (DEME) informed that its latest trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) River Thames  was successfully launched at PaxOcean Graha, Batam in Indonesia.The TSHD, designed and build by Royal IHC, has a hopper capacity of 2,300m³ and a maximum dredging depth of 30 meters below the waterline, said a press release from Royal IHC, a supplier of equipment, vessels and services for the offshore, dredging and wet mining markets.The RiverThames is a copy of the 2,300m³ TSHD LESSE, successfully delivered by IHC to Baggerbedrijf de Boer in August. The vessel is designed to maintain sea and inland waterways, as well as perform land reclamation.It is equipped with the latest electronic system to improve positioning, sounding and execution of dredging work.

DEME Starts Installation at Belgium’s Largest OWF

Belgium-based Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV (DEME) said that its installation vessel ‘Innovation’ will set sail to the Belgian North Sea with the first load of 58 turbine foundations and transition pieces for installation at the SeaMade offshore wind farm.Currently the first monopiles and transition pieces are being loaded at SIF Holdings' Maasvlakte terminal in Rotterdam.With a 487 MW capacity SeaMade is the largest offshore wind farm in Belgium. SeaMade stands for a combination of two offshore wind projects, previously known as Mermaid (235 MW) and Seastar (252 MW).DEME’s scope includes the installation of the 58 foundations and all inter-array cables, the installation of two offshore substations and the 220 kV submarine high voltage cable installation.

Bonny River Joins DEME Fleet

The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME is investing in a new generation of trailing suction hopper dredgers which will be trendsetting in coastal protection and dredging hard soils.DEME ordered newest generation trailing suction hopper dredger  'Bonny River' at Royal IHC."Thanks to the combination of unique characteristics such as an extremely long suction pipe, a large transport capacity with limited depth and an additional heavy duty rock draghead, the multidisciplinary ship can be used effectively in shallow water and in hard soils.," DEME said in a press release.With the 'Bonny River', DEME is responding to the macroeconomic trend of maritime sand extraction at greater depths and further offshore.

DEME Wins Elbe Deepening Contract

DEME, an international group of specialized companies involved in complex marine engineering works, has won a major contract to carry out the deepening of the Elbe fairway in Germany.The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group said that its German subsidiary Nordsee Nassbagger- und Tiefbau GmbH, based in Bremen, has acquired the maintenance dredging contract on the River Elbe in Germany.The contract has been awarded to a joint venture, including DEME’s German subsidiary, for a period of two years. DEME Appoints Luc Vandenbulcke as CEO

Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV (DEME)'s Board of Directors announced that with effect from January 1, 2019 Luc Vandenbulcke will succeed Alain Bernard as the company’s CEO.Bernard started working for the group in 1980 and has been CEO of DEME since 2006. Over the past 12 years he transformed the group from a purely dredging organization into a diversified marine engineering group with operations worldwide.Under his leadership sales figures increased from €1.1 billion to €2.4 billion (2017), while DEME’s fleet became one of the most innovative and diverse in the industry.Luc Vandenbulcke (KU Leuven, civil engineer) has worked at DEME Group for the past 21 years.

COSCO Shipping, DEME Signs Umbrella Agreement

The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME and COSCO Shipping - the largest shipping company in the world - will work closely on the development of offshore wind energy in China. The umbrella agreement was signed today in the presence of Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel and the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. The attendance of both Heads of Government signifies the importance of the cooperation agreement and the Chinese vision concerning the transition to renewable energy. China COSCO Moving to Offshore Winds

China COSCO Shipping, which uses bulk carriers and container vessels to transport goods, has seen its cargo business decline amid China's slowdown and has decided to get into the offshore wind power generation business, reports  Nikkei. New Offshore Wind Project Launched in China

The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME and China COSCO Shipping – the largest shipping company in the world – have formed a joint venture to develop offshore wind energy in China. The cooperation is in line with the Chinese climate vision and its aim to develop renewable energy, both of which were recently incorporated in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) for social and economic development. The Chinese government wishes to increase the installed capacity of offshore wind energy significantly by 2020. Damen Completes Maintenance of Flintstone

The fallpipe vessel Flintstone has departed from Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam, part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, following a six-week programme of maintenance and repairs together with her first Special Survey. Owned and operated by the Tideway group of companies, a division of the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME, the 155-metre, 20,000 tonne DP2 Flintstone is the flagship of the Tideway fleet. DEME Invests in Flemish Dredging Tech

Following a successful laser cladding pilot project in 2015, Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME has signed a three-year cooperation agreement with VITO spin-off Laser Cladding Venture (LCV) to strengthen the cutter incisors used to dredge hard soils. Dual-fuel Engines for DEME’s New Dredger

Anglo Belgian Corporation, a manufacturer of medium speed diesel engines, announced the sale of two 16VDZD dual fuel engines that will power a new build vessel for the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME. This agreement was officialized with the Dutch shipyard Royal IHC. The commissioning of the dredger Minerva is scheduled for late 2016, making it the first dredging vessel that will be equipped with dual fuel engines, in addition to DEME's other trailing suction hopper dredger Scheldt River that will be built and put into service around the same time.

Dredger: 9-Year Wear Life on Cutterhead Shaft Bearings

While the marine industry is rife with rough working conditions, dredging operations arguably pose the toughest challenge to any class of marine equipment. Water lubricated Thordon Composite cutterhead shaft bearings have reportedly performed well for nine years on one of the largest cutter suction dredgers in the world –Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering N.V. (DEME)’s D’Artagnan (28,200 kW total installed power). The vessel had a major dry docking at Drydocks World-Dubai in February 2014 where the shaft was removed, and bearings and shaft inspected.

Chuan HUP Subsidiary Sells Entire Stake In Dredging International

Marine transportation services provider, Chuan Hup Holdings Limited (“Chuan Hup” or “Group”), announced that its subsidiary, ACIS Holdings Limited (“ACIS”) has disposed of its entire 10 percent stake in Dredging International Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (“DIAP”) for S$15.2 million. Chuan Hup estimates the net profit before tax attributable to this sale to be S$5.5 million. The cash sale of 6.3 million ordinary DIAP shares, representing 10 percent of the total issued share capital of DIAP, was made to Tideway B.V. (“Tideway”) of the Netherlands. The remaining 90 percent of DIAP is owned by Pacific Dredging Corporation B.V. (“Pacific Dredging”).

Water lubricated Thordon Composite cutterhead shaft bearings have performed well for nine years on one of the largest cutter suction dredgers in the world–Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering N.V. (DEME)’s D'Artagnan (28,200 kW total installed power). The vessel had a major dry docking at Drydocks World-Dubai in February 2014 where the shaft was removed, and bearings and shaft inspected. Originally built in 2005, the D'Artagnanself-propelled cutter suction dredgeris involved in very heavy rock-breaking having a cutting power for operations in rock soils of 6000 kW.

SembCorp Marine Wins Contract

IADC Young Authors Award

The International Association of Dredging Companies presented its Best Paper Award for a Young Author for the 28th time at the CEDA Dredging Days 12-13 December 2012 in Abu Dhabi, to Mr. Arnaud Verschelde for his paper ‘Erosion Behaviour of a Draghead’. Mr. Arnaud Verschelde graduated from the Delft University of Technology ‘Faculty of 3mE’ (Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering). He is presently a Project Engineer Automation at DEME (Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering). The erosion behaviour of a draghead designed in-house at DEME was investigated.
