Tomley to Oversee Long Beach Green Port Programs
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners this week appointed Heather A. Tomley as the new Director of Environmental Planning. She will be charged with leading Green Port environmental initiatives. Tomley has been serving as the City of Long Beach Harbor Department’s Acting Director of Environmental Planning since July 2013. Thomas Jelenić Joins Parsons Brinckerhoff
Thomas Jelenić has been named Senior Ports and Marine Manager in the Los Angeles office of Parsons Brinckerhoff, a global infrastructure strategic consulting, engineering and program/construction management organization. In his new position, Mr. Jelenić is responsible for leading and supporting port environmental planning and design projects as well as helping to expand the firm’s ports practice in California. He comes to Parsons Brinckerhoff after 14 years with the Port of Long Beach, most recently serving as Assistant Director of Environmental Planning.
Plug In to AMP or Stay Away from California Ports
Come Jan. 1, 2014, the maritime industry in California faces a looming reality: ships must link up to port alternative maritime power (AMP). “Compliance is not optional,” said T.L. Garrett, vice president of Pacific Merchant Shipping Association. Garrett’s group represents the majority of international shipping lines and terminal operators doing business on the West Coast; most of them will be impacted by state rules to go into effect next year mandating the use of shore power for container, reefer and cruise ships.
