Germany Orders LNG Fueled Research Ship

The Fassmer shipyard in Germany is currently cinstructing a new research vessel to be owned by Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH), the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. The new 75-meter-long ship, the Atair, will replace her 30 year old namesake, and will be the first German research vessel operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. The engines for the new vessel will be supplied by Wärtsilä, who will also supply exhaust cleaning systems based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and the LNGPac system for complete fuel gas handling.

Hyundai Heavy, CNH Industrial in Mini Excavator Alliance

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s largest shipbuilder and a leading construction equipment manufacturer, announced today it enters into an exclusive strategic alliance agreement with CNH Industrial, one of the world's largest capital goods companies, for the mini excavator business. Under the 10-year-long-agreement with a renewal option for three years, CNH Industrial will market 4 mini excavator models that will be supplied as complete products by HHI through OEM production, and 10 other mini excavator models in the form of complete knock down kits through License production. Thanks to the agreement, HHI expects that sales of mini excavators will double over the next 10 years. Mini excavators to be rolled out under the agreement will hit the global market from early 2017.

Alfa Laval Dips on Q2 Profit, Margin

Q2 adjusted EBITA SEK is 1.39 bln vs year-ago 1.82 bln and 1.44 bln seen in Reuters poll. CEO says sees slightly lower demand in Marine & Diesel division in Q3 vs Q2. Sees Equipment division demand flat or somewhat lower in Q3 vs Q2. Alfa sees positive FX impact of SEK 475 million in 2016 and 100 million in 2017 and says strategic review that was announced in previous quarter is continuing according to plan. Additionally, the firm says result of this review will be presented before end of year.

Sulzer Takes Measures in the Pumps Equipment Division

Based on the current challenging environment in the oil and gas market, Sulzer decided to take measures to streamline the manufacturing capacities of its Pumps Equipment division. Since the beginning of 2015, Sulzer’s Pumps Equipment division has been organized in three market-oriented business units Oil and Gas, Power, and Water, a dedicated global Parts, Retrofit, and Nuclear Services organization, and a Global Operations network. With the new setup, the company targets to make better use of its capacity and improve quality. At the same time, the oil and gas market remains challenging, leading to low investment levels and project suspensions.

SCI Launches Liferaft Equipment Division

Survival Craft Inspectorate (SCI), a global provider of emergency marine evacuation systems, is to launch a new division at the Cruise Shipping Miami 2013 exhibition (March 11-14, 2013). The new division of SCI will supply, install and maintain emergency liferafts for the commercial cruise shipping and energy markets. SCI will initially open three offices in the United Kingdom with the first being at the company’s Findon operation. Initially 10 jobs will be created across the three new operations.

Diesel Engine Manufacturers in Korea Joint Venture

Hyundai Heavy Industries & Cummins announce a J/V to build mid-range engines in Korea. The engines will extend from 150 hp to 300 hp (112-224 kW) output for application in a wide range of Hyundai construction and industrial equipment. The launch of the Hyundai Cummins Engine Company (HCEC) joint venture took place in Ulsan, Korea, with a ceremonial co-signing of the agreement by Byeong-Ku Choe, Chief Operating Officer and President – Hyundai Construction Equipment Division, and Rich Freeland, Cummins Vice President and President – Engine Business. The HCEC joint venture operation will be located in the city of Daegu, Korea, with engine manufacturing to commence in 2014. The new facility will have a capacity in place to build more than 50,000 engines per year at full production.

China Shipbuilding Industry on Downward Slide

China’s first half 2012 shipyard figures make grim reading & the national shipbuilding association warns little chance of help from Beijing. In the first half, newly received order volume in China were 10.74m tons, sharply down 50.3% year-on-year. Till the end of June 2012, orders on hand stood at 125.87m tons, a decrease of 30.7% year-on year. The equipment division of the Ministry of Industry and Information estimated many yards may will run out of work during the second half of 2012. “The shipbuilding industry is getting worse. Beijing has not released any new specific supporting measures for the industry yet,” an official from the national shipbuilding association told 'SinoShip News'.

Atanasio joined Alfa Laval in 1982 in the company&rsquo;s Food and Dairy Group. He joined Alfa Laval Separation in 1990. In 2001, Atanasio was named President of Alfa Laval USA&rsquo;s Parts and Service Division, and then President of the company&rsquo;s Equipment Division in 2004.

Joakim Thölin has been appointed General Manager, Segment Marine & Diesel at Alfa Laval AB, effective as of April 1, 2010. He will be based in Tumba, Sweden, and he replaces Peter Carlberg who has taken up the position as Managing Director of Alfa Laval KK, Seoul Korea. Joakim Thölin joined Alfa Laval in 1993 and has since held international management positions in Peru, U.S., Korea and most recently as Managing Director in Austria and Regional Manager for the Equipment Division in the Sales Company Mid-Europe (Germany, Austria and Switzerland).

Schat-Harding 370-Person Lifeboats to Cruise Ship

Lifeboat and davit manufacturer Schat-Harding has delivered the world’s largest lifeboats, complete with unique davit systems, to the Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas. The Oasis of the Seas is equipped with eighteen of Schat-Harding’s unique, 370-person CRV55 lifeboats and LS45 davit systems. The CRV55 has a catamaran hull, which provides excellent sea-keeping capability and maneuverability. The LS45 davit, meanwhile, is a completely new integrated system for cruise vessels.

Unitor fire protection systems for Spanish LNG newbuildings

The Ships Equipment Division of ship service specialist Unitor has won the contract to supply fire protection systems to four 93,450-grt, 138,000-cu.-m. LNG carriers building at Spain's Izar for transportation of natural gas been the Caribbean and Spain and Egypt and Spain. newbuildings under construction at Izar's Bilbao and Sestao shipyards. Spain's oil and gas major Repsol. comprising: Tapias/Dorchester Maritime; Elcano/Gas Ocean and Marpetrol/Knutsen. under a charter from Spain.

Unitor to Supply Bergesen LNG Newbuildings

Unitor’s Ships Equipment division has secured a contract to supply fire fighting and fire protection equipment to four large LNG carriers under construction for Norwegian owner Bergesen at Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co Ltd. All four 145,000m³ LNGCs (Hull Nos. H-2221-4) will be supplied with the following Unitor systems and equipment: · HotFoam fire extinguishing system for the engineroom · Dry Chemical Powder system for use on deck · High Pressure CO2 fire extinguishing system for special compartments · Portable fire fighting and safety equipment The contract is valued in the region of $1.5 million. Both HotFoam and the high pressure CO2 system are total flooding systems. The four Bergesen LNGCs are due for delivery in 2005 and 2006.
