ABS Awards AiP to SHI LNG Re-liquefaction System

ABS has announced that it has awarded approval in principle (AiP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its innovative X-Reli LNG Boil Off Gas Expander – part of SHI’s Expansion Re-Liquefaction System.According to the statement from the South Korean shipbuilder the X-Reli system is optimized for low and medium pressure application, which SHI says offers increased efficiency and reliability over existing high-pressure re-liquefaction systems.“Re-liquefaction is a useful capability for owners and operators, offering increased flexibility and the potential to maximize cargo delivery. ABS AIPs for Hudong-Zhonghua Gas Carrier Design

The global provider of classification and technical advisory services to the marine and offshore industries ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to two new gas carrier designs from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.The two new vessel designs are for a 200,000cbm LNG Carrier and a 147,000cbm Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC).“ABS is proud to support the pioneering work of Hudong Zhonghua in the design and delivery of gas carriers. ABS, Industry Partners to Advance Autonomous Shipping

ABS joined the Unmanned Cargo Ship Development Alliance to work with industry partners, including class organizations, shipyards, equipment manufacturers and designers to advance autonomous shipping. The design will integrate features of independent decision-making, autonomous navigation, environmental perception and remote control. “Increased digitization, advanced technologies and new levels of connectivity are changing the way the maritime industry operates,” says ABS Greater China Division President Eric Kleess.

ABS, COSCO Partner on Arctic Shipping Development

Facing changing climate conditions in the Arctic which have effectively generated new opportunities shipping in the region, classification society ABS and commercial shipper China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) have signed a cooperation agreement aiming to enhave trans-Arctic shipping development. Signing the agreement in Shanghai were ABS Greater China Division President and COO Eric Kleess and Captain Meijiang Cai, Director of COSCO Safety & Technology Supervision Division. ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Howard Fireman and COSCO Executive Vice President Yuhang Wang were also in attendance at the signing ceremony.

ABS Realigns Divisional Structure

ABS New Management in Europe, Asia

Effective 1 July, ABS will introduce new senior management in its Europe and Pacific divisions. At that time, William J. Sember, currently President and COO, ABS Europe Ltd, based in London, will return to Houston as Vice President Global Marketing, responsible for further developing client relations in all sectors. Todd Grove, President and COO of the Pacific Division of ABS will move from Singapore to London, assuming the position of President and COO, ABS Europe Ltd. “Europe remains the center of our shipowner client activity,” said ABS Chairman and CEO Robert D. Somerville. Grove has previously served as President of the Americas Division of ABS and, prior to that, as Vice President Western Europe, based in London.
