Drone Technology Aids Antarctic Ship Operations

A quadcopter drone has helped navigate the Aurora Australis through the sea ice on its annual resupply voyage to Casey station. Flown off the aft deck of the ship, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) provided the crew with real-time imagery of the sea ice conditions ahead of the ship, optimising navigation decisions. Australian Antarctic Division Future Concepts Manager, Matt Filipowski, said the drone was a valuable addition to the current suite of sea ice navigation tools, which include satellite imagery and radar. “This is the first time the Australian Antarctic Division has used drone technology to assist ship operations,” Filipowski said. The proof-of-concept flights were undertaken by Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) certified company, Australian UAV.

CAE USA Names New Tech Director

CAE USA marine systems has named Capt. William H. Luebke to the newly created position of director of technology, effective Jan. Luebke, who just retired from the U.S. Navy, will work with the division's existing management team to set, monitor and evaluate technical standards, as well as develop new engineering approaches to bring the best marine control solutions to market. Luebke is expected to work with technology leads in CAE's Tampa, Montreal and Norway facilities. He will report directly to Joe Lee Frank, president of CAE USA marine systems. CVN 78 Ship Specification Signed

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the Program Executive Officer (PEO) Aircraft Carriers held a signature and awards ceremony on Sept. 5 at the Washington Navy Yard to commemorate the certification of the ship specifications for the CVN 78 Class Aircraft Carriers, which makes up the CVN 21 program. NAVSEA's Ship Design, Integration and Engineering Directorate (SEA 05) led efforts, in cooperation with Northrop Grumman Newport News, the lead design shipyard, to develop the CVN 78 ship specifications with support from across the Navy Enterprise. The certification of the CVN 78 ship specifications marks a major milestone in the future aircraft design process and forms the basis of the technical data package used to prepare a ship construction contract.

NAVSEA Sponsors Program at U. of Michigan

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has created a Summer Naval Surface Ship Design program in cooperation with the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan. The program will run from May 1 to June 16 and will include professors from the University of Michigan, the Naval Postgraduate School, Virginia Tech and instructors from NAVSEA’s Engineering Future Concepts and Surface Ship Design, Ship Costing, and Combat Systems Groups.
