MacGregor Deck Equipment for Intership's Eco-bulkers

MacGregor's equipment package will also play a role in delivering more sustainable operations.

MacGregor's Deck Equipment For Chinese Shipyard

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has secured a comprehensive deck equipment contract from New Times Shipyard, in China, for Intership Navigation Co Ltd's three new 36,500 dwt Laker-class bulk carriers. The vessels will each feature an optimised MacGregor cargo-handling system comprising MacGregor cranes and hatch covers as well as Hatlapa steering gear and electrically-driven variable frequency drive (VFD) Hatlapa deck equipment. "The MacGregor team supported Intership with its cargo-handling solution development at a very early stage with planning sessions, technical layouts and budget pricing, so that the shipowner could present the new ship concept further to the charterer," explains Hans Berg, Account Manager for Intership at MacGregor.

Year of the C-Dragon

With an eye on the growing Intra-Asian trade routes Germanischer Lloyd (GL) developed a novel container vessel design concept: the C-Dragon. UASC, HHI, FutureShip Team Up for New Containerships

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) have recently announced they will expand their fleet with new super-efficient container vessels. Constructed to DNV class, the designs have been optimized through a productive cooperation between FutureShip and Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI). Setting its sights on competitive slot cost, UASC, one of the world’s fastest growing container carriers, has ordered five 14,000TEU vessels with six options and five 18,000TEU vessels with one option. FutureShip ECO-Assistant 4.0 Adds New Features

TrimOptimizer: The easy-to-use interface has become a trademark of ECO-Assistant. Speed, displacement (or current drafts) and optional extra ballast are all that is needed to get the optimal trim.

The latest version of ECO-Assistant, the trim optimisation tool from FutureShip, the maritime consulting arm of Germanischer Lloyd, incorporates a number of new features, including a fuel consumption calculator, system usage monitoring, benefit reporting and an E-learning module to speed familiarity with the system. With some 600 installations since its introduction three years ago, ECO-Assistant has been proven to deliver significant energy fuel savings to its users and the new features will enhance the functionality and usability of the system.

The importance of Intra-Asian trade routes continues to grow as the region's economies continue to expand. Asian container traffic, in particular, is projected to be the fastest growing sector in the world for the next several years. In response to this Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has developed a novel container vessel design concept for this region: the C-Dragon concept. GL unveiled this new concept with the international maritime community at Nor-Shipping 2013. C-Dragon measures 211.9 meters in length between perpendiculars and 37.3 meters in width with a loading capacity of 3,736 TEU.

FutureShip, MPA Establish Research Center in Singapore

FutureShip, Germanischer Lloyd's (GL) maritime engineering and consultancy subsidiary, has announced the unveiling of its ECO Research Center in Singapore. The Center, which aims to conduct research to strengthen FutureShip's energy efficiency solutions for its Asian clients, will be supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) under its Maritime Cluster Fund (MCF). The ECO Research Center will be the first research and development (R&D) Center to benefit from the enhancement to the MCF, which was expanded to cover the setting up of R&D and Test Centers, critical components in developing a maritime knowledge hub, in Singapore.

GL Container Ship Forum

The Forum looked at a broad spectrum of topics concerning container shipping including: stowage and lashing, the potential for LNG vessels and bunkering, trends in the liner markets, high tensile steel and thick materials for ship building, pilotage and maneuvering XXL container ships in the Hamburg harbor and the advantages of having an Emergency Response Service. Some 50 representatives from the container industry met with GL experts at the Container Ship Forum, to hear the presentations and participate in informal discussions.

Advanced Simulation Helps to Solve Ballast Water Management Problems

Ballast water management poses problems in design and operation of ships. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) offers solutions with design, type approval and trouble-shooting. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) denotes collectively techniques for solving equations describing the physics of fluid flow. CFD is by now widely known and accepted in the maritime industry, but mostly associated with flows around the hull and propellers, for example in the context of designing more fuel-efficient ships. However, CFD is in many ways far more versatile than classical model testing.

Bank Considers EEDI When Making Ship Finance Decisions

The German KfW IPEX-Bank evaluates energy efficiency of its merchant shipping portfolio, sees EEDI a key indicator of economic advantage. KfW IPEX-Bank, one of the largest ship financing banks in the world, has evaluated together with FutureShip, a subsidiary of Germanischer Lloyd, the energy efficiency of its shipping portfolio based on the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The applied valuation approach is based on the standards of the International Maritime Organisation (special organisation of the United Nations) and provides an indicator for the energy efficiency and CO2 emissions of merchant vessels. From 2013 binding EEDI limits will be introduced for newbuildings.

LNG Container Ship Design Gets GL Approval

Germanischer Lloyd presents an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate to TECHNOLOG for the IPP designed STREAM range of 3,000 TEU to 5000TEU ships. The design of the STREAM 4200 LNG’s 32.25-metre beam allows passage through the existing Panama Canal locks. A draft of 10.50m to 12.00m means the vessel can operate worldwide, including the Kiel Canal (future dimensions) between the Baltic and North Sea. The entire vessel design concept is focused around saving energy. A single screw is directly driven by a dual-fuel, two-stroke, 22.9 MW engine developed specifically for LNG applications by MAN.

Conference Tackles Impact of Shipping on the Environment

Szczecin, Poland  - The challenges of preparing to meet the next generation of shipping regulations were very much on the minds of the participants at Germanischer Lloyd's (GL) latest exchange forum in Szczecin, Poland. Reducing the impact of global shipping on the environment and making improvements in efficiency are the focus of looming legislation which, over the next few years, seems certain to change the maritime landscape. More than 40 representatives from the maritime industry, shipping companies, ship management agencies, maritime journalists and stakeholders met to hear presentations from GL experts and discuss how the incoming regulations would impact upon the industry.

GL Exchange Forum - Report on MEPC's 62nd session

The subject of Carbon Dioxide dominates the future of many industries today. Whether it be the Shipping, Automotive, Aviation, or Power Generation industries the questions of how to account for, reduce, produce, capture and minimise the impact of Carbon Dioxide generated by that industry is seldom left out of the discussion. So it was Germanischer Lloyd’s traditional recap of the latest session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of International Maritime Organization (IMO), focused on the groundbreaking developments at the 62nd session. The 62nd Session was notable for several reasons, the use of a vote to approve the measures rather than by consensus and the establishment of a North American emissions control area for example.

GL SeaScout 2.0 has been installed on board the MSC SAVONA, Reederei Claus-Peter Offen’s 14,000 TEU containership. MVeP Phase 2 Seeks Authors

The Marine Vessel Environmental Performance (MVeP) Assessment was presented November 4th, 2010 at the SNAME Annual Meeting. This is the work of SNAME T&R Panel EV-10 previously Ad-hoc Panel 19. Eleanor Nick Kirtley and Tim Leach of the Glosten Associates presented to an audience of about 50. The Glosten Associates also featured MVeP at their booth in the Expo where many conference attendees were able to speak with the presenters and other participants including Matt Winkler, VP of Seaworthy Systems – Roll Royce. In Phase 1, MVeP developed a checklist of environmental impacts resulting from marine vessels. Each impact can be assessed on its own merit, and the compilation of all assessments makes clear the trade-offs of various measures giving a holistic view of the ship’s performance.

Canadian Committee of GL, Annual Meeting

"How to make ships more efficient?" This was the key question posed at the 15th Canadian Committee meeting of Germanischer Lloyd (GL). More than 20 representatives of the Canada and U.S. Flags, ship owners and operators, yards, consultants, and port authorities attended the event hosted by Executive Vice President Americas Capt. Kevin Coyne and Committee Chairman Peter Cairns from the Shipbuilding Association of Canada. "Reducing the environmental impact of shipping in order to upgrade its image as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, is one of the most important topics for the maritime industry," he said in his introduction. Apart from fuel efficiency and emissions also statutory delegation and ship recycling was on the agenda.
