The Race is On to Pioneer Hydrogen Shipping

Hydrogen is touted as an inevitable green fuel of the future. Tell that to the people who'll have to ship it across the globe at hyper-cold temperatures close to those in outer space.Yet that is exactly what designers are attempting to do.In the biggest technological challenge for merchant shipping in decades, companies are beginning to develop a new generation of vessels that can deliver hydrogen to heavy industry, betting plants worldwide will convert to the fuel and propel the transition to a lower-carbon economy. There are at least three projects developing pilot ships that will be ready to test transporting the fuel in Europe and Asia within the next three years…

INTERTANKO Releases Standardized Gas Form

The International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO) has released updated Gas Form C forms for LPG and LNG with the intent on standardizing both the forms themselves and the information provided on them.Currently, a large number of Gas Form Cs are company-specific, often referring to commercially sensitive information such as speed and consumption, which can alter throughout the stages of a vessel’s life. The new forms will assist INTERTANKO Members, as well as the industry at large, with improving the quality of the documents that are publicly available.“The role of the Gas Form C was identified as an Owners’ document that is predominantly used during the negotiation of a deal.

Next-wave LNG Terminals get Smaller, More Flexible

The liquefied natural gas market is growing every year, but the terminals that ship and receive the fuel are shrinking. The booming sector's next-generation infrastructure is being designed for a emerging-market buyers that want smaller volumes on shorter, more flexible contracts. LNG export terminals, where the gas is liquefied and put on vessels for shipping, have traditionally been massive, custom-built facilities that cost tens of billions of dollars. And so to justify the investment, they have typically required equally massive, long-term supply deals, often lasting a decade or more. Numerous terminal projects on the horizon, by contrast…

Daewoo Develops Gas Supply System

In May 2011, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering developed a new HP-FGS (High-Pressure Fueled Gas Supply) system for MAN-Diesel & Turbo’s ME-GI Engine. Though there are small and middle-size LNG fueled vessels already, this dual fuel engine was designed for large commercial vessels. This HP-FGS system supplies highly-pressurized (about 300 bar) natural gas fuel to an engine. To date, existing FGS systems compress gas to a high pressure. This process requires enormous amounts of electricity and large deck area to accommodate the size of this equipment.

In May 2011, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (www.dsme.co.kr) has developed a new HP-FGS(High-Pressure Fueled Gas Supply) system for MAN-Diesel & Turbo’s ME-GI (Gas Injection) Engine, and presented it to the market via a road show in Copenhagen, Denmark. Though there are small and middle size LNG fueled vessels already, this dual fuel engine for large commercial vessels which cover most of shipping industry is an original. This HP-FGS system effectively supplies highly-pressurized (about 300 bar) natural gas fuel to an engine.
