Serica Energy Restarts Production at Erskine Field

Serica Energy said that efforts to remove gas hydrates in pipeline between Erskine and the Lomond platform had been successful and it  has resumed production for the first time since January." Production from Erskine has restarted and flow rates are being optimised. Further updates will be provided once the re-commissioning process is complete," said a press note from the company.Erskine, in which Serica holds an 18% interest, was suspended in mid-January due to a blocked export pipeline which carried condensate from Erskine to the neighbouring Lomond platform. Fugro Returns to China for Gas Hydrate Research

Dutch survey and geotechnical services firm Fugro said it has been awarded a contract by China’s Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS) to perform gas hydrate investigation on the Northern Continental Slope of the South China Sea. The contract is valued at approximately $40 million and is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2018. The gas hydrate field research program is the fifth that Fugro will undertake for GMGS, and the two companies have worked together in this field of research since 2007.

EMGS to Map Brazil's Gas Hydrates

Electromagnetic Geoservices ASA (EMGS) has received a contract worth USD 1.5 million for a research project in Brazil. The project will use 3D EM data to map shallow gas hydrates in the Pelotas Basin. The project is a collaboration between the Pontifical Catholic University (PUCRS) of Rio Grande do Sul and Petrobras' Research and Development Center called CENPES. EMGS will support each stage in the workflow, from survey design and data acquisition to processing and interpretation. The company's services will enable the integration of EM data with seismic and other geophysical and geological information to give explorationists a clearer and more complete understanding of the subsurface. This improves exploration efficiency and reduces risks and the finding costs.

Taiwan Greets German Gas Hydrates Research Ship

The research ship 'Sonne' has arrived in Kaohsiung to help Taiwan scientists explore for gas hydrates off the country's SW coast. The research ship docked at the Port of Kaohsiung, where local experts led by National Taiwan University oceanography professor Saulwood Lin and researchers from the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Germany shared ideas on the potential energy source, reports Focus Taiwan. Arctic Surveys Yielding Data and Savings

BOEMRE Studies Methods of Locating Gas Hydrate Deposits

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) has released a report on a bureau-funded study of new and more effective methods of predicting, detecting and mapping the occurrence of gas hydrates in deepwater environments. The study, Multicomponent and Multifrequency Seismic for Assessment of Fluid-Gas Expulsion Geology and Gas Hydrate Deposits: Gulf of Mexico Hydrates, examined the various methods used to locate gas hydrate deposits. If such deposits occur in sufficiently high concentrations, they can be a potential new source of natural gas. “This study is critical to furthering our ability to assess deepwater gas hydrates as a future energy resource,” said BOEMRE Director Michael R. Bromwich.

MMS Issues Final Notice of Central Gulf Lease Sale 198

The Minerals Management Service (MMS) has announced the Final Notice of Lease Sale 198 for offshore oil and gas in the Central Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The lease sale is scheduled for March 15, 2006, in New Orleans. The lease sale encompasses 4,040 unleased blocks of approximately 21.3 million acres in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Planning Area offshore Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The blocks are located from three to about 210 miles offshore in water depths of four to more than 3,400 meters. MMS estimates the lease sale could result in the production of between 276 to 654 million barrels of oil and 1.59 to 3.30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Japan: Advanced procedures sustain industry in turbulent markets

Japan retains its perch atop the world commercial shipbuilding heap, although its position grows increasingly precarious with the continued emphasis on shipbuilding market share by its Korean competitors, and the emergence of low-cost, hungry start-ups in China and the former Eastern bloc nations. The challenges facing the Japanese shipbuilders and ship equipment suppliers are not unlike those faced by its European counterparts during much of the past decade. While Japan's strong suit continues to be its ability to mass produce tankers and bulk carriers in a very efficient and profitable manner, its technical prowess and continually refined manufacturing procedures can only take it so far in what continues to be a labor intensive process.
