Sea Shepherd, Namibia Fight Fisheries Crime

The Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) compliance officials and Sea Shepherd, onboard the Ocean Warrior, have jointly carried out successful surveillance activities in Namibia`s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), effectively causing illegal factory trawlers to abandon the Skeleton Coast.The main objective of these joint patrols was to tackle Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in Namibian waters. These initiatives assisted the MFMR and other Namibian law enforcement agencies to force illegal and foreign industrial factory trawlers out of the Namibian EEZ suspected to have targeted horse mackerel stocks through IUU activities.Large foreign industrial factory trawlers – former Soviet Union made trawlers -  have been ‘border hopping`…

US Navy 'Green Fleet' Fills up with Italian-made Biofuel

A U.S. warship took its first delivery of Italian-made biofuel on Thursday as part of the Navy's programme to use more alternative energy. The USS Mason was refuelled alongside an Italian vessel, the Andrea Doria, in the seas off of Italy's southern coast with a mix produced by Italy's Eni that has 5.5 percent palm oil biofuel blended into marine fuel. The two destroyers travelled at about 5 knots side by side with a supply ship, the Etna, between them pumping the fuel to both ships through large black tubes. "It's a first today," U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus told Reuters aboard the Mason.

Sixth FREMM Frigate Launched

Today the launching ceremony of the frigate Luigi Rizzo took place at the plant in Riva Trigoso (Genova). The sixth of a series of 10 units FREMM - European Multi-Mission Frigates, was commissioned from Fincantieri by the Navy Italian in the framework of international cooperation between Italy and France, with the coordination of OCCAR, the joint organization for European cooperation in armaments. Godmother to the ship was Wilhelmina Maria Rizzo, daughter of Luigi Rizzo, two gold medals for bravery. The ceremony was attended, among others, Giovanni Toti, President of the Liguria Region, the Vice Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi, Chief of Staff of the Navy, and am the CEO of Fincantieri, Giuseppe Bono.

Fincantieri Launches Italian Navy Frigate

Riva Trigoso (Genoa) shipyard celebrated the launch of the frigate Alpino, the fifth of a series of 10 FREMM vessels - Multi Mission European Frigates, ordered from Fincantieri by the Italian Navy within the framework of an Italo-French program of cooperation. Godmother to the ship was Maria Rosa Solimano, cousin of Francesco Solimano awarded with the Gold Medal of Military Valor. Present at the ceremony were, among others, Claudio Burlando, Governor of Liguria, Senator Nicola Latorre, Chairman of the 4^ Senate's Defense Committee, Admiral Luigi Binelli Mantelli, Italian Chief of Defense, Lieutenant General Claudio Graziano, Italian Army Chief of Staff…

Italian Navy To Join the Dots on Shipbuilding Plans

Following an announcement earlier this year by the Italian Navy's chief admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi, the service's head of ship design is preparing to elaborate on plans and partnership potential at the annual Surface Warships conference being held in the UK in January 2014. "The Italian Navy is currently working to start a shipbuilding programme which would include different types of platforms, including a multirole patrol vessels, a multirole amphibious ship, a logistic support vessel and a multirole submarine support vessel," Captain Sergio Simone told Defence IQ ahead of his address, explaining that ageing destroyers, frigates, patrol ships and corvettes are all in need of urgent replacement.

Italy Yard Launch Fremm Warship

Fincantieri's Riva Trigoso (Genoa) shipyard celebrates the launch of the frigate “Carlo Margottini”, the third of a series of Fremm vessels - Multi Mission European Frigates, ordered from Fincantieri by the Italian Navy within the framework of an Italo-French program of cooperation. Godmother to the ship was Ms. Stefania Portaccio, granddaughter of Captain Carlo Margottini. The frigate was named in honour of Captain Carlo Margottini, who was decorated for military valour after the sinking of Nave Artigliere in 1940.

UAE Navy Receives Fincantieri Patrol Boat

Fincantieri Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard in Italy has delivered the patrol boat 'Salahah' to the United Arab Emirates' Navy. The new ship's sister the Ghantut was delivered last January together with an "Abu Dhabi Class" corvette. The two patrol vessels – whose names come from an area of the Emirates near Abu Dhabi – were ordered in 2010 within the  “Falaj 2” program. The contract  provides for an option for a further two vessels in addition to technology transfer to a local shipyard for the construction of further sister ships.
