The White House announced President Biden's appointment of former Milwaukee port director, Adam Tindall-Schlicht, as the next Administrator of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS). DNV GL will Produce Report on Sustainable Blue Economy in Norwegian Arctic

Center for the Ocean and the Arctic has commissioned DNV GL to produce report that answers questions like 'how do we manage ocean industries and future opportunities in the Arctic as part of a sustainable future?'.The newly established Center for the Ocean and the Arctic is based deep within the Arctic circle in one of Norway’s northernmost cities, Tromsø. Their task is to coordinate efforts to chart a course for sustainable use of the ocean and the Arctic.Their mandate also includes working towards the UN’s sustainable development goal #14 on conservation and sustainable use of the oceans. The sustainable development goals are both ambitious and overarching in their targets.

Embracing and spanning the full breadth of Great Lakes geography and business mix, GLG’s Joe Starck has his multi-missioned firm looking to the future – in more ways than one.The Great Lakes Group (GLG) takes its beginnings from its 1899 incorporation by industrial icon John D. Rockefeller, who formed the Great Lakes Towing to satisfy the demands of a Midwest industrial revolution that brought bigger ships to the region. Existing vessels, unable to keep up with demand, were supplemented and replaced by a fleet of as many as 100 tugboats; the first steel tugs in the region. GLG still has a tug that was part of that original operation.

Marine News showcases the best of North America’s 2017 workboat deliveries. There is something for everyone. Notwithstanding the lingering offshore energy downturn, there were plenty of bright spots for North American shipyards in 2017. If a hull was delivered in 2017, we took a look at it, with several areas as a focus for inclusion into this edition. For starters, it is always exciting when a domestic yard delivers a vessel – or multiple vessels, for that matter – to foreign buyers. We can compete in a foreign arena; on price, quality and on-time delivery. This year was no different. No less important is the environmental footprint of a vessel, and there was plenty to report on from that angle in the past 12 months. The domestic waterfront is indeed getting greener and cleaner.

GLS Wins Multi-Vessel USACE Contract

Great Lakes Shipyard has been awarded a contract by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Detroit District for the drydocking and repairs of the Floating Plant, based at the Detroit Field Station. The shipyard will perform routine drydocking, maintenance and repairs of the Tug DEMOLEN, Crane Barge VELER, and Deck Scow BC-6576. In addition to drydocking the vessels, work includes underwater hull cleaning and maintenance; inspection of propulsion and steering systems; sea valves maintenance; bearing inspections; and other routine cleaning, maintenance and repairs.

Great Lakes Shipyard Now a Damen Licensed Builder

Great Lakes Shipyard (GLS) informed that it has entered into a five-year agreement with B.V. Scheepswerf Damen Gorinchem authorizing the Cleveland shipyard as an official builder of Damen designs. GLS’s Damen Series is designed by Damen, built by Great Lakes Shipyard and made in the U.S.A. The agreement also provides for Damen technical services, including experienced personnel for onsite management and supervision on any and all construction projects. Now, all of the technology and know-how of Damen, including drawings, specifications and design information, is at the fingertips of Great Lakes Shipyard for the benefit of its customers in the United States.

Great Lakes Shipyard Install New Plasma Cutting Machine

Great Lakes Shipyard (GLS) have installed a new state-of-the-art plasma cutting machine, the Plate Pro Extreme 3100, which allows the shipyard to make more of its own parts without relying on outside vendors or subcontractors. GLS say that the addition of this cutting table expands the range of services available to its customers and greatly improves the efficiency of Great Lakes Shipyard operations, while also enhancing the quality and precision of the work being produced. Amarcon Receives Orders For Two Octopus-Onboard Systems

Amarcon, a member of the ABB group, announced that it has received an order for two Octopus-Onboard motion monitoring systems for Heavy freight cargo vessels KOREX SPB no.1 & 2 from CJ Korea Express. CJ Korea Express is a result of the merger between Korea Express and CJ GLS. With a head-office in Seoul, the company is providing differentiated logistic services across the globe. The company is South-Korea’s largest total cargo delivery company, providing services as contract logistics, forwarding, stevedoring and international express.

GLS Completes USCG Repairs

Great Lakes Shipyard Performs Emergency Repairs on USCG Aids to Navigation Barge. United States Coast Guard Cutter MOBILE BAY of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin departed Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio after completion of drydocking and repairs to the bow thruster on it 120-foot Aids to Navigation Barge. The barge was hauled out on Monday, September 17th using the Shipyard’s 770-ton Marine Travelift. The shipyard immediately removed the bow thruster and disassembled it in the shop for repairs.

Great Lakes Shipyard Completes First Repair Contract with a Canadian Tug-Barge Company. McKeil Marine of Hamilton, Ontario contracted Great Lakes Shipyard to provide winter layup and repair work on their tug and barge, John Spence and Niagara Spirit. The Shipyard completed general steel work on both the tug and barge and installed a winch system for the cover of the Niagara Spirit. The completion of this contract marks the first major repair contract that Great Lakes Shipyard has had with a Canadian company.

Luka Sees Intereuropa Merger In July

The merger between Slovenia's port operator Luka Koper and shipping firm Intereuropa is expected to take place on July 1, according to Luka Koper officials. The new firm will be called Globalni Logisticni Servis (GLS). Most issues related to the planned merger were resolved at a recent meeting of Luka and Intereuropa with government representatives, officials said. The issues included transfer of the state's shares in Luka to GLS and lease of state-owned land used by Luka. The state would have a 35.7 percent stake in GLS, compared with 51 percent now. The final decision on the merger will be made at shareholders' meetings of both companies, probably in April.
