CG Foundation Fundraiser for Families of Helicopter Tragedy
The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced a fundraising drive for its emergency Family Disaster Relief Fund in response to the Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crash off the coast of La Push, Washington this past Wednesday, July 7th, that claimed the lives of three servicemen. The crewmembers of CG-6017 were based at Air Station Sitka, Alaska. The Coast Guard Foundation is seeking financial support for the Family Disaster Relief Fund. This fund provides immediate assistance to the families of the fallen crewmembers as they deal with this tragedy, and will provide comfort for other Coast Guard families who find themselves in similar devastating circumstances.
Sideways to Swimmers: Unusual Tank Testing
Offshore supply vessels, passenger vessels, yachts. How much power is required and how will they ride in seas? These are the questions Gerry Stensgaard, P.Eng, and the staff at the Ocean Engineering Centre (OEC) of Vizon Scitec (formerly BC Research) usually answer. But over the years naval architects and others have asked for answers to some unusual questions. "They are open minded about special testing," says Tim Nolan, P.E., Naval Architect at Tim Nolan Marine Design, PC. Special testing might mean a peculiar test of a typical craft. Or it might be basic resistance and seakeeping tests for an unusual craft; which might seem easy, but the test setup can become difficult. Located in Vancouver, Canada, the OEC consists of a 220 by 12 ft.
EBDG-Designed Project Honored by ACEC
The replacement of three historic river ferries along the Missouri River in Montana has been recognized by the Montana chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). The Missouri River Ferry Rehabilitation Project won an Honor Award at the Montana chapter’s annual engineering competition. The vessels were designed by Seattle’s Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) and Helena, Montana-based Morrison-Maierle, Inc. The Montana Department of Transportation-owned project involved the design and construction of three replacement ferry boats and their cable drive systems, as well as new terminal structures and site improvements. EBDG developed the vessel hull design, propulsion system, electrical/mechanical systems and safety features on the ferries. Morrison-Maierle, Inc.
