Treasure hunters Sub Sea Research team up with Howe and Howe Technologies to recover 'Port Nicholson' cargo. Last year, Sub Sea Research made international news with the announcement of their discovery of the $4 billion gold and platinum cargo aboard the SS Port Nicholson, a freighter that was sunk by a German U-Boat off the coast of Massachusetts in 1942. A year on, Sub Sea Research has teamed up with Maine-based, award winning technology company Howe and Howe, which designs and builds custom vehicles, robotic platforms and fabricated goods.

Transas has installed a new Z-Drive Console for the full mission ships bridge simulator in the California Maritime Academy (CMA), in mid June. The Z-Drive simulator models a “reverse” tractor tug with Z-Drive propulsion modules located at the vessel's stern. The Z-Drive tractor tug simulator was provided by Transas USA, and installed by Transas and Buffalo Computer Graphics using a control console manufactured for the Academy by Seaman’s International Union of Piney Point, Maryland. A pilot course at the Academy taught by Captain Greg Brooks, one of the leading experts on tractor tugs and tug operations in the country, was conducted with students from Millenium Maritime, Inc. of San Pedro, California.

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine delivered Bulldog, a 98 x 37 ft., 6,700 hp, Z Drive firefighting tug, to Crescent Towing of New Orleans, La. Bulldog provides ship-assist and escort services for LNG tankers at the Elba Island LNG re-gasification terminal in Savannah, Ga. Bulldog is a new Washburn & Doughty in-house design and the first tug built at the yard for Crescent Towing. Washburn & Doughty's Chief Naval Architect and Vice President, Bruce Washburn, drew on the company's experience designing and building Z-Drive Tugs for ship docking and LNG operations while designing the 98-ft.
