KR Verifies HMM’s GHG Reduction Calculation Methodology

HMM Signs Biofuels MoU

Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GS Caltex to secure marine biofuels.HMM plans to conduct the trial use of the fuels on its three 24,000 TEU container ships in the second half of this year. The biofuels comprise 30% biodiesel derived from used cooking oil and 70% high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO).Biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 80% compared to conventional fuels, notes HMM. Diana Shipping Sells Panamax Bulker. Nets EGPN Charter for Capesize Unit

Diana Shipping, a dry bulk shipping company, has signed an agreement to sell the 2001-built Panamax dry bulk vessel “Oceanis” to an unnamed buyer. Separately, the company has secured a charter for its Capesize bulk carrier "New York."The company said Friday that the Oceanis vessel would be delivered to the buyer by April 16, 2021, at the latest, for a sale price of US$5.75 million before commissions.Separately, Diana Shipping has entered into a time charter contract with EGPN Bulk Carrier Co., Hong Kong, for one of its Capesize dry bulk vessels, the m/v New York. Monjasa Acquires Tanker for Middle East Operations

Oil and shipping group Monjasa said it has acquired the 9,600-dwt oil and chemical tanker Monjasa Server from Golden-Agri Stena. The 117.6-meter vessel is set for cargo and bunkering operations in the Arabian Gulf by November 2020.Formerly known as the GS Adventure, the 2009-built Monjasa Server joins Monjasa’s marine fuel operations across the Middle East, which currently consist of four tankers ranging between 4,000 and 10,000-dwt.Equipped with deepwell pumps and five tank segregations allowing multiple fuel grades onboard, Monjasa Server increases operational flexibility.

USCG Takes Delivery of First Upgraded 47' Motor Lifeboat

The U.S. Coast Guard recently accepted the Birdon America's first upgraded 47-foot Motor Lifeboat (47 MLB) at the agency's National Motor Lifeboat School (NMLBS) in Ilwaco, Wash., completing the first major milestone in the MLB Service Life Extension Program (SLEP). The first article vessel will undergo a four-month operational assessment by members of NMLBS.The 47 MLB is the Coast Guard's standard lifeboat, designed to weather hurricane force winds and heavy seas, capable of surviving winds up to 60 knots, breaking surf up to 20 feet and impacts up to three Gs.

CNOOC Buys Two Carbon-neutral LNG Cargoes from Shell

China National Offshore Oil Corp, or CNOOC, has agreed to buy from Royal Dutch Shell two cargoes of liquefied natural gas with offset carbon emissions, marking China's first gas imports of this kind, said the Shanghai Oil and Gas Exchange.CNOOC and Shell will use carbon credits won in projects in China's northwest Xinjiang and Qinghai region to offset the carbon emissions involved in producing and consuming the two gas cargoes, the exchange said in a statement on Sunday.CNOOC will auction the two cargoes at the Shanghai exchange.

Diana Shipping announced that, through a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, it has entered into a time charter contract with Oldendorff Carriers GmbH & Co. Taiwan Gets 1st Carbon Neutral LNG Shipment

Taiwan accepted its first carbon neutral shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG). State-owned CPC Corporation, a natural gas, and gasoline company in Taiwan announced receipt of LNG cargo from Shell.Nature-based carbon credits have been used to compensate the full carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated – from exploring for and producing the natural gas, to use by the final consumer.The cargo, which was delivered at the Yung-An LNG Receiving Terminal, will provide enough carbon neutral LNG to power nearly 150,000 homes for a year.Credits used for this deal are purchased from Shell’s global portfolio of nature-based projects, including the Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project in Indonesia…

Volvo Penta Powers Hybrid Scandinavian Ferries

Volvo Penta to power three hybrid and hybrid-ready ferries currently being built at GS Marine Production AS. GS Marine is currently building a new ferry for Faroe Island operator, Standfaraskip Landsins. This ferry will have a speed of 20 knots and be powered by two of Volvo Penta’s engines. The D13-700 IMO III engines have a power output of 515kW at 2,250 rpm and will be coupled with a Brunvoll hybrid control system – allowing the vessel to run on the engines or electric alone, and even both in unison.

Port of Luleå 36m Hybrid Icebreaker Tug Delivered

The powerful 36 meter hybrid icebreaker tug Vilja was delivered to her Owner, Port of Luleå, on June 26th, 2019 at Gondan Shipyard in Spain. On July 4th, Vilja arrived in Luleå and the crew was very satisfied with the first sailing experience and tug performance on the journey home. The vessel will soon be used for ice management, firefighting and navigation aids service duties in the Port of Luleå, Sweden and will assist ships and conduct coastal towing in the northern sector of the Gulf of Bothnia.Vilja is a 36 meter TundRA 3600–H, Icebreaking Escort Tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd.

Chevron in LNG Supply Deal with GS Caltex

Hyundai Merchant Marine Names New VLCC at Daewoo Shipbuilding

South Korean container line Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has named its new very large crude carrier (VLCC) at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).The 300,000 dwt vessel was named the Universal Leader during the ceremony held at DSME’s Okpo shipyard in Geoje on January 29, 2019.About 100 distinguished guests attended the ceremony including C.K. Oman Shipping Company (OSC) is reporting strong performance in domestic markets following long-term deals with local refineries and traders including ORPIC and OTI.OSC’s growth in the region is being driven by a 20-year contract to transport condensate for ORPIC (Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company) and a 15-year deal transporting methanol for OTI (Oman Trading International) from Salalah Methanol plant.The company is further supporting the export of LPG from Sohar Refinery to Yemen, Sudan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Aqualis Offshore Completes Jacket Installation in Bahrain

Aqualis Offshore has completed the jacket installation engineering of an 1800T steel jacket structure offshore Bahrain as part of the Bahrain LNG Import Terminal. Aqualis Offshore, part of Oslo-listed Aqualis ASA, delivered the project in cooperation with APMC, who were in charge of the transportation and installation contract on behalf of its EPC contractor client, GS E&C. Aqualis Offshore was contracted by GS E&C to provide loadout, transport and offshore installation of the jacket. Aqualis Offshore’s scope of work provided full engineering services related to the loadout,transportation and float off operation, towing, positioning, lowering to the seabed and buoyancy tank removal, including all marine procedures. The offshore installation was executed in May 2018.

Korea Lines orders two VLCCs at Hyundai Heavy

South Korean shipping firm Korea Line Corporation (KLC) has placed an order for two new very large crude carriers(VLCC) at country's biggest yard, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), and the company will explore further collaborations with the country's shipbuilders. According to Yonhap news agency, the new VLCCs are expected to have been delivered by the  2020. The total amount of the agreement will amount at 185.6 billion won (US$173 million). The carriers, which can hold 300,000 tons of crude oil each, will be used in transporting petroleum for GS-Caltex Corp., the second-largest refiner in South Korea, the report said, quoting Korea Line. The company recently signed a long-term deal with GS-Caltex to ship crude oil.

Hyundai Merchant Marine Gets $420 Mln to Add 5 VLCCs

South Korea’s leading sea carrier Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. (HMM) has signed a financial contract with Korea Shipping and Maritime Transportation to build five 300,000-ton very large crude carriers (VLCCs), said a report in Business Korea. HMM has secured $420 million (470 billion won) through a state shipbuilding subsidy funding program, it said. The order has already been placed with local shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) September last year. The financial support program consists of 60 percent of unsubordinated investment and 40 percent of subordinated investment. HMM participated in subordinated investment with 47 billion won (US$43.56 million), 10 percent of the total shipbuilding contracted price.
