Green Shipping: Toward a Clean Future

Photo: SMM

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced its targets of cutting greenhouse gas emissions from global shipping in half by the year 2050, and to make ships entirely CO2-neutral before 2100. But long before that, the so-called sulphur cap will take effect: From 2020 all oceangoing ships must run on fuel that contains no more than 0.5 per cent of sulphur. According to estimates by classification society DNV GL, up to 70,000 ships will be subject to this requirement.

Alfa Laval PureSOx Platform Offers Dual-compliance

The Alfa Laval PureSOx platform is expanding to provide not only 0.1%S compliance for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), but also 0.5%S compliance with the coming global sulphur cap. With the option of a dual-compliance system as well, customers can choose the best scrubber solution to match their sailing profile. The Alfa Laval PureSOx platform is already the most proven and customer-adapted exhaust gas cleaning solution on the market. Regardless whether the MEPC implements the 0.5%S global cap in 2020 or 2025, the platform is now expanding to address an even greater range of customer needs. With broader fuel sulphur regulations on the horizon, the platform is now expanding to address an even greater range of customer needs.

Alfa Laval to Help Meet 0.5% Sulphur Fuel Cap

Alfa Laval is ready to help customers meet a global 0.5% sulphur fuel limit, no matter what the outcome of the MEPC70 meeting. The new Alfa Laval PureSOx Global is part of a major expansion of the PureSOx platform that will be released at SMM in Hamburg. Alfa Laval launched the original Alfa Laval PureSOx far in advance of today’s Emission Control Area (ECA) legislation. In the same way, the company is prepared to guide customers to 0.5% fuel sulphur compliance long before such a limit is implemented. Whether the decision is taken at October’s MEPC70 meeting or postponed until 2025, Alfa Laval has a solution in place. At this year’s SMM exhibition, a major expansion of the PureSOx platform will be presented at Alfa Laval’s stand (Hall A1, Stand A1.226).

Damen to Display InvaSave BWTS at SMM

Image: Damen

By combining Damen’s capabilities in shipbuilding, research and services, the group now offers a cost-effective alternative to retrofitting fixed BWT systems. Damen has developed the InvaSave Mobile Ballast Water Discharge Technology which enables port-based ballast water management. The mobile solution means ballast water only needs treating at the point of discharge, in contrast to fixed onboard BWT installations that also need to treat ballast water at intake. SMM Set for Hamburg

At the beginning of 2008, the order book was estimated by the British shipbuilding market experts of Lloyd's Register - Fairplay (LRF) at 10,055 ships ordered, and 329.7m gross tons (GT). By the beginning of July those figures were up more than 10 percent to 11,200 newbuildings and 363 million GT – a new high. So the maritime equipment suppliers among the total of 1,950 exhibitors from 55 nations will have full order books to show at SMM 2008. This premier fair of world shipbuilding will for the first time occupy all eleven exhibition halls of the New Hamburg Trade Fair at the 23rd shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology, international Trade Fair Hamburg, to be held from September 23 to 26, which means more exhibition space than ever before, at 87,000 square meters.
