New Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity

Marine ecosystems provide us with food and raw materials, they have an impact on air quality and global climate, they break down harmful substances and serve as places of recreation and tourism. The functioning of these ecosystems – and thus also the basis for human well-being – depends on the biological diversity of the oceans. The way climate change and human influences change marine biodiversity will in future be examined by scientists in a new institute: as was recently decided by the senate of the Helmholtz Association, the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity will be set up next year in Oldenburg. The new institute will pool and expand the research excellence in this field of the University of Oldenburg and the Alfred Wegener Institute…

Largest FPT Lock Gates Installed in the Netherlands

New fiber reinforced polymer lock gates, reportedly the world’s largest, were installed in the new Lock III in the Wilhelmina canal in Tilburg, the Netherlands on January 9. On behalf of Rijkswaterstaat (Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management), Royal HaskoningDHV has deployed its expertise in the field of fiber reinforced polymers for the design principles, the design review and quality control. Never before have FRP lock gates of these dimensions (6.2 x 12.5 meters) been installed. The mitred gates can control a water level difference of no less than 7.9 meters.

HAROPA, an Official Partner for Vinexpo 2015

From 14 to 18 June, HAROPA, world top port for wine and spirits, will be an official partner for Vinexpo 2015, a major and inescapable event in the wine and spirit sector. For its first participation in Vinexpo, HAROPA - the alliance of the ports of Paris, Rouen and Le Havre - will be present at the heart of the new “expert exclusive” zone dedicated to the logistics of wine, beside three partners: customs, Soget and Hillebrand, the world leading forwarder for wine and spirits. Since 1981, Vinexpo has asserted itself as an international reference for the promotion of wine and spirits. This year, about 50,000 professional buyers coming from 120 countries are expected to attend; they will be welcomed by 2,400 exhibitors spreading out on 40,000m2.

CMA CGM MANET in Sydney with Select Burgundy Wines Cargo

CMA CGM Group is pleased to announce that the CMA CGM MANET will arrive in Sydney International Container Terminals in Australia on July, 22nd. The bottles of Burgundy Wine will then have completed the first part of their trip around the world, that began on June, 14th. On board the container a precious selection of some of Burgundy most exceptional wines selected by the “Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin” - a guild celebrating its 80 anniversary this year - will be received by the Australian equivalent Order. The container will be reloaded back on the CMA CGM AZURE and sent back to France from Sydney on July, 28th. To celebrate the 80-years anniversary of the “Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin”…

London Gateway Terminal: First Scheduled Arrival

Britain’s new global shipping port welcomes its first scheduled vessel, the ‘MOL Caledon’ from South Africa. After more than a decade of planning and construction across three square miles of development, DP World London Gateway deep-sea port is now open & operational. The ‘MOL Caledon’ was welcomed by DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Vice Chairman Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Group CEO Mohammed Sharaf, Chairman of MOL Liner Junichiro Ikeda, and shipper representatives JFH Hillebrand MD David Mawer and Chingford Fruit MD Gavin McNally, together with other senior executives.

Trans Ocean First to Comply with Flexitank Protocols

The Code of Practice consists of five parts including; material testing, container selection, container labelling, incident management and training. Following a process of review, implementation and audit, Trans Ocean became the very first flexitank operator in the industry to submit all documents to the COA, including independent audit reports where required. “This is a significant milestone, and the path leading to this achievement has been both interesting and challenging”, said Brendan McKenna, Hillebrand Group Board Member.

Canaveral Creates Seaport Police Department

Joseph Hellebrand, a 30-year law enforcement veteran, will serve as chief of the newly created Port Canaveral Police Department. The Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners established the department late last year as culmination of a four-year initiative to enhance public safety at the world’s second busiest cruise port and Central Florida’s outlet to the sea. “The formation of the Police Department is simply the next step in the evolution of public safety at Port Canaveral in the aftermath of 9/11 and the increased demands of both federal and state laws and regulations,” said Port CEO Stan Payne. Hillebrand, who rose through the ranks from rookie officer to deputy chief with Melbourne, Florida Police Department, will develop the Port’s new department during the next few months.

New Mega Containership for Hapag-Lloyd

Hapag-Lloyd has taken delivery of another mega containership with a capacity for 8,750 standard containers, the “Osaka Express”. The vessel was named in Hong Kong and will be deployed between Europe and Far East. “Over a third of containers carried in global transport is accounted for by China. All forecasts indicate continued stable growth. To be able always to provide adequate ship capacity for our customers in Asia, we have invested massively in recent years and will continue to do so in future,” emphasised Michael Behrendt, chairman of the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd AG, at the naming ceremony in Hong Kong. The naming was performed in Hong Kong by Catherine Desbois, wife of Gérard Desbois, CEO of JF Hillebrand Group AG.
