Chinese VP Visits Hamburg Terminal
China’s Vice President Wang Qishan visited the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) at the Port of Hamburg.Wang was greeted by the Chairwoman of the Executive Board of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), Angela Titzrath, Hamburg’s First Mayor, Dr Peter Tschentscher, and representatives of the Chinese container shipping company Cosco Shipping Lines. LR Supports Chinese Recycling Yards' EU Application
LR’s initial verification of the Ship Recycling Facility Plans for both Zhoushan Changhong International Ship Recycling Co. Ltd. and Jiangyin Xiagang Changjiang Ship Recycling Yard – the first non-EU applications – is a vital first step towards the facilities’ inclusion on the European Union’s list. Lloyd’s Register (LR) said it is working with facilities seeking to be at the forefront of sustainable ship recycling and continues to support Sea2Cradle who have been assisting the shipyards in complying with international, regional and local regulatory requirements.

Two Chinese ship recycling yards have applied for inclusion of their facilities in the future EU list of Ship Recycling Facilities. The official documents for the application were presented yesterday in Brussels to Julio Burgués, Head of the Unit Waste Management and Recycling of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Environment by Li Hongwei owner of Zhoushan Changhong International Ship Recycling Co., Ltd and Jiang Xiagang Changjiang Shiprecycling Yard. With a capacity of respectively 100 vessels (1.1 million Light Displacement Ton) and 120 vessels (1,2 million LDT) these two yards are the largest ship recycling facilities in the world. The application follows the new Ship Recycling Regulation of the European Commission which was adopted in November 2013.
Nickel Ore Shipments: Lessons Learned from Losses
One of the most pressing problems for the bulk shipping industry is the safe carriage of nickel ore. The increasing demand for this commodity is fuelled by China’s thirst for nickel ore as it is the principal alloy component for stainless steel. Chinese nickel ore imports have spiraled from nearly 5m metric tons (mt) in 2006 to near 50m mt in 2011. The bulk of these imports come from Indonesia, with the Philippines now running very close behind. But this fast-expanding trade has been marred by the heavy price paid in terms of lives and vessels lost. In August, the 2012-built Trans Summer sank off Hong Kong, but all 21 crew were saved by rescue helicopters. All these vessels were carrying nickel ore from Indonesia to China.
SNA Meeting Offers China Navy Insights
Though China’s navy is generally a mystery to the west, and its build-up and intentions are often characterized as lacking transparency, a Chinese navy official insists that the country’s intentions are purely defense orientated. In translating an explanation from a superior officer, Liu Hongwei, Senior Captain, Naval Attache at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the U.S., explained: We will not fire the first shot, but when fired upon, the aggressor will not fire a second shot. Liu Hongwei was the featured luncheon speaker at a Surface Navy Association’s (SNA) Greater Washington Chapter luncheon, held July 24, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City.
