Tanzania: The Next Hotbed of Construction & Energy Activity?

Ralph Lobbe, Business Development Manager Africa at Mammoet, elaborates on possibilities for Engineered Heavy Lifting and Transport.

Representatives of Mammoet and other Dutch companies visited Tanzania to explore potential construction projects and investment opportunities in the East African country which has impressive growth rates and large stocks of underseas gas it is looking to develop. Tanzania is shaping up to be a big opportunity for Dutch companies that are active in energy, infrastructure and transport. Mammoet, Shell, Boskalis, Heerema and Van Oord traveled along with a trade mission led by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Lilianne Ploumen (PvdA).

Singapore's Jaya Group Holds Seagoing Officers' Conference

The offshore vessel operator and builder, held its first ever officers’ conference in India, to be followed by similar gatherings in other countries. The inaugural event, at the Hyatt Hotel in New Delhi, was attended by more than 100 Merchant Navy officers and their spouses along with Jaya’s senior management led by Chief Executive Officer Venkatraman Sheshashayee, and the conference theme was 'Growing the role of the Indian seafarer with the Jaya Group as a global offshore vessel operator'.

Panama Canal Receives Ethical Business Practices Recognition

For the third consecutive year, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) was recognized by the Ethisphere Institute as one of the World's Most Ethical Companies. According to the Ethisphere, this recognition highlights companies that outperform industry peers by embracing ethical business practices and demonstrating industry leadership. The 2013 World’s Most Ethical Companies list features 145 companies from 36 industries in areas including retail, business services, energy and utilities, electronics, transportation and logistics. RINA celebrates ties with China

Tight Credit Squeezes Maritime Industry

“Liquidity has come back to some extent,” said Oliver Ebner, Senior Manager, Project and Structured Finance for the National Bank of Abu Dhabi. Ebner is one of a panel of speakers lined up to address a special session on financing the industry in the global economic slowdown at Middle East Money & Ships, the region’s premier networking event for senior executives from the maritime and finance sectors. The conference from 7-8 October 2009 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai, will also assess the continued appetite for investment in shipping, the likely pattern for recovery, where the money will come from as well as providing a realistic assessment of the current order book.

Cal Maritime Leadership Symposium

Trade and transportation organizations with close ties to California’s vital maritime industry will gather in Sacramento May 12-14 for the California Maritime Leadership Symposium. The event is organized by The California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA), California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference (CMANC), California Marine & Intermodal Transportation System Advisory Council (CALMITSAC), The Harbor Association of Industry and Commerce, the Propeller Club of Los Angeles/Long Beach and the California Maritime Academy. “Our focus will be education and information,” explained David Hull, Port Director of the Humboldt Bay Harbor District and chair of the symposium.

AAPA to Honor Senator Murray

U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) has been selected as Port Person of the Year by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), the organization representing public ports throughout the Western Hemisphere. It is AAPA's most prestigious annual award, honoring an individual whose outstanding work or service has made a significant contribution to public port authorities and/or maritime commerce. The award will be presented to Senator Murray on March 23 at 8:30 a.m. during AAPA's annual Spring Conference, held at the Washington, D.C. Park Hyatt Hotel. The Port of Seattle, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the Port of Tacoma nominated Murray for the Port Person of the Year honor, which was ultimately decided by AAPA's Executive Committee upon review of all nominations.
