GE Vernova to Equip UK FSS Ships with Hybrid-electric Propulsion

GE Vernova's Power Conversion business in the UK has been chosen by Team Resolute to supply advanced hybrid propulsion technology for three Fleet Solid Support (FSS) ships for the UK Ministry of Defense (MOD).Team Resolute is a consortium created by Spanish shipbuilder and defense company Navantia, shipbuilder Harland & Wolff and naval architects BMT to deliver the FSS program, for which Navantia UK, the UK subsidiary of Navantia, is prime contractor.The 216-meter-long ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) will be designed with an emphasis on minimizing carbon emissions.

ABB Secures $27M Order to Equip Eneti's WTIV Duo

ABB has secured an order of around $27 million to supply Eneti’s two newbuild vessels with advanced power, automation, and control systems for improved safety and performance.The two $330 million wind turbine installation vessels (WTIV) will be delivered to Monaco-based offshore wind construction player Eneti Inc. from the South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in Q3 2024 – Q2 2025.The vessels will feature advanced power, automation and control systems, real-time performance analytics and electric propulsion from ABB.

BAE Systems offers complete, efficient propulsion and auxiliary power systems utilizing electric technology. Hudspeth has been involved with maritime sales, marketing and product development since 2000. He currently serves as a regional co-chairman for the Passenger Vessel Association, is a judge for the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association student design competition, and frequently speaks and writes on maritime and ferry related issues. Hudspeth lives in Bellingham, Wash.

AMELS contracted Alewijnse Marine to perform the complete electrical systems installation on the first two vessels of its new range of Limited Edition AMELS 60 superyachts.The 60-meter long AMELS combines innovative naval architecture with hybrid propulsion technology.Alewijnse will deliver a total package of electrical installation and systems integration, encompassing an Integrated Bridge System, Audio-Video systems and IT network as well as the hybrid propulsion system.The electrical engineering phase is underway for the first AMELS 60.

Wärtsilä launched the Wärtsilä HY for Dredger, a new product based on Wärtsilä’s HY hybrid propulsion technology, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of dredging operations.The product was recently unveiled at a Future Dredger Day event held at the Wärtsilä's Hybrid Center in Trieste, Italy. The Wärtsilä HY for Dredger features a combination of different power sources, including the engines and energy storage systems, the power distribution equipment, and the Energy Management System (EMS). The EMS ensures instant load taking and dynamic power demand.

Battery based energy storage systems for marine applications are finally moving, cleanly along the global waterfront at full speed. The UN Report on climate change on November 2, 2014, stated that the unregulated use of carbon based fuels must cease by the end of the century. While people can debate the causes of global climate change, this type of strong statement is increasingly familiar. The shipping industry is one of the largest consumers of carbon-based fuel, and as such, has great reason to be concerned.

GE to Power, Propel UK's New Frigates

The U.K. Ministry of Defense has engaged in a major program to update and upgrade its current fleet of frigates. In the next decade, Type 26 Global Combat Ships will become the backbone of the Royal Navy, replacing its existing Type 23 Frigates. The Type 26 will incorporate the latest in hybrid propulsion technology: at low speeds, it will run on an electric drive system, while at high speeds, it will take power from the gas turbine. GE’s Power Conversion business has won the design, development and assessment (DDA) contract to provide the electric propulsion system.
