Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced Brandi Smith has been named program director of the Newport News Columbia-class submarine program.Smith will be responsible for leading the company’s construction activities for the U.S. Navy’s new class of ballistic-missile submarines, as well as maintaining strong relationships with General Dynamics Electric Boat and Navy customers. She will report to Jason Ward, Newport News vice president for Columbia-class submarine construction.Smith began her career at Newport News in 2002 as an engineer in the carrier overhaul program.

Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (ZPMC) has commissioned Siemens to equip the latest diving support vessel being built for Toisa Ltd. with complete drive and power systems. According to Siemens, the solution is designed to improve the vessel’s reliability and maneuverability, as well as reduce fuel consumption, so lowering overall operating costs. The integrated drive system (IDS) used in the vessel, with a length of approximately 146 meters, conforms with the international certification standards of DNV GL.

Incat Crowther has delivered Wavelength 4, a 19m catamaran tour vessel claimed by its operator to be “the cleanest tour vessel on the Great Barrier Reef”. Built by Aluminium Marine in Queensland, Wavelength 4 features Incat Crowther’s efficient hull form and boasts numerous environmental features. The green approach was practical, focusing on a low environmental cost of producing and operating the vessel rather than emerging technologies. In addition to the reduction in fuel usage that comes with the hull form, the vessel utilizes LED lighting and solar panels. The Yanmar engines are Tier 2 rated and among the cleanest burning engines available. The vessel operates on the basis of zero emissions whilst out on the reef, with the generators not required. by increased natural ventilation.

CSBC Corporation Taiwan has chosen Siemens to supply diesel-electric propulsion systems and other accessories for four 65,000-ton semi-submersible deck cargo vessels (SSDCVs). The country’s largest shipyard is building the vessels for a customer in Singapore. Compared to conventional mechanical propulsion technologies, Siemens’ diesel-electric system will reduce fuel costs by up to 15 percent, resulting from unique power management features, the manufacturer said. Likewise, associated propellers, rudders and thrusters will improve the vessel’s maneuverability when operating at low speeds. Diver detection sonar technology developed by Sonardyne International Ltd, UK, has played a part in a international exercise organized to train naval forces in mine countermeasures, maritime security operations and harbor protection operations. The International Mine Counter-Measures Exercise (IMCMEX) runs off the coast of Bahrain every 18 months to test the abilities of the navies of the world to keep sea lanes open and safe. A total of 6,500 personnel and 38 warships from 44 navies took part in the event, the third and largest so far.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, will deliver Kalmar SmartLane automated gate system to Port of Liverpool, operated by Peel Ports Group. The new system will reduce waiting times and administration for hauliers, resulting in faster turnaround. The implementation is scheduled to be completed by early 2015. Investment in Kalmar SmartLane automated gate system is part of Peelport's £5.5m package of improvements to port infrastructure. Raytheon Company says its Board of Directors has elected Dr. Thomas A. Kennedy to serve as its Chief Executive Officer, effective March 31, 2014, when William H. Swanson, who has served as CEO since 2003, steps down following his 65th birthday. Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar officially launched the Coast Guard’s new state-of-the-art S92 search and rescue helicopter for the Dublin region in Weston Airport. This is the fourth Sikorsky S92 helicopter base to come into operation for the Coast Guard and means all four Coast Guard bases now have upgraded helicopters. The new S92 helicopters replace the Sikorsky S61 which was in use until recently at the Coast Guard bases in Dublin, Shannon, Sligo and Waterford.

Card reader technology is tested, proven and in use, nationwide. While the maritime industry awaits the Fed’s edict on MTSA, the solution already exists. The Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) requires that individuals needing unescorted access to MTSA-regulated Facilities and Vessels must first obtain a TWIC. To obtain a TWIC Card, an individual must meet certain eligibility requirements and pass a security threat assessment conducted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Individuals are then issued a tamper-resistant credential containing the cardholders biometric fingerprint data, which provides a conclusive link between the card and the individual cardholder. To date, more than 2 million of these credentials have been issued.

What is the consequence of violating the curfew

Limiting the use of Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) smart cards and readers will create significant security vulnerabilities in our maritime infrastructure, the Smart Card Alliance Access Control Council said in comments submitted this week to the U.S. Coast Guard. The Smart Card Alliance’s comments referred to the Coast Guard’s Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Reader Requirements Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). The rulemaking proposes limiting the use of tamper-resistant, biometrically-enabled TWIC smart cards and readers, and proposes relying on visual inspection of TWIC cards as the primary security protocol for 95% of the maritime user population.

AVEVA has announced that it has made further enhancements to its AVEVA Marine portfolio. AVEVA Marine users will now be able to integrate P&IDs and schematic diagrams coming from various systems, including the AVEVA P&ID solution. The company will offer a new Mechanical Equipment Interface product using the STEP AP203 format, allowing users to import mechanical equipment for modelling Outfitting components. Data in the Plant and Marine Outfitting databases will also be made exchangeable.

On August 18 the Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV) operating from the Royal New Zealand Navy Diving Tender, HMNZS Manawanui, has allowed formal identification to be made of the sunken vessel resting on the seabed as the Princess Ashika. The ROV identified the vessel by allowing the Royal New Zealand Navy’s (RNZN) Diving and Underwater Search Team to read the ship's name plate. Conditions on the surface are not currently favorable but the Navy team is continuing with its efforts. The water clarity is reported to be very good and this has allowed the team to conduct a thorough search of the sunken vessel. One side of the Princess Ashika is obstructed and the ROV is unable to see into the passenger compartment. The vessel is sitting flat on the seabed and appears to be intact.

Silk subsidiary, Jasa Merin Sdn Bhd, signs up to buy two Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels from previous owners. The vessels named IDS Darul Ehsan and IDS Darussalam are 70-metre 120-tonne bollard pull AHTS with an engine rating of 10,800 break horsepower and were acquired from their previous owners for a total consideration of RM 240.6 million funded by internally generated funds and bank borrowings. Jasa Merin has partly settled a total of RM 16 million of the purchase price for the vessels. Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) achieved another in a series of milestones for the Zumwalt-class destroyer program with the successful Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE) Release 6 software specifications review. Zumwalt’s TSCE is an advanced, open systems architecture that provides a scalable platform for cost-efficient delivery of new mission capability while capitalizing on the reuse of millions of lines of code from existing Navy programs. The system delivers a new level of Mission Systems Integration and automation. As such, it is a primary driver for the 60 percent reduction in manning for the Zumwalt-class destroyer versus the requirement for today’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN) delivered the first Electronic Modular Enclosure (EME) for the Zumwalt-class destroyer (DDG 1000) to the U.S. Navy. EMEs are large subsystem assemblies that efficiently package the shock mitigation, electromagnetic interference protection, thermal conditioning, security and vibration isolation for commercial off-the-shelf electronics integrated inside. The EME unit, which houses ruggedized and commercial electronic equipment for the ship's external communications, was shipped from Raytheon's facility in Largo, Fla., to Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Miss. The EME will be integrated into DDG 1000's advanced composite deckhouse. There are 16 EMEs on each Zumwalt destroyer, and each unit contains more than 235 individual electronics cabinets.
