Korean Shipbuilders Get AiP for Ballast Tank Coating

South Korean shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) have gained Approval in Principal (AiP) for the application of the “solvent free 1 coating system” for ballast water tanks from both the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) and the Liberian Registry.The eco-friendly (solvent free) 1 coating system has been verified for excellent coating quality when compared to the traditional double coating system and has passed quality standards for alternative…

Tech File: An Inside Look at Ballast Tank Linings

The proper lining of ballast tanks is essential and critical to ship safety. Not too many decades ago, ships traveling the North Atlantic routes were experiencing terrible losses from outright sinking in the turbulent seas. It was eventually discovered that the primary culprit was hull failure from ballast tanks rupturing from the inside out due to simple, plain old-fashioned rusting and galvanic corrosion. The U.S. Navy led the way and came up with a recommended formula, or recipe, for a ballast tank coating that paint manufactures could copy in bidding for Navy business.

Hempel Coats Luxury Cruise Ship Silver Muse

Luxury cruise line owner and operator Silversea has appointed coatings supplier Hempel to deliver innovative coating solutions for its newbuild 40,700 GT cruise ship Silver Muse. Silver Muse was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa Sestri Ponente and delivered on Monday, April 3. Silversea selected Hempel’s advanced fouling defence coating Hempaguard X7 to protect the hull of its new vessel. Hempaguard X7 uses an advanced combination of hydrogel-silicone and an efficient fouling preventing biocide in a single coat.

Hempel Debuts Offshore Assets Coating Range

Two new coatings, Hempadur Quattro XO 17820 and 17870, are being introduced to increase the service life and reduce on-station maintenance requirements of offshore assets by leading worldwide coatings supplier Hempel. The new high-performance pure epoxy uni-primers presented today (9 January), combine excellent corrosion protection with construction flexibility. Hempadur Quattro XO 17820 / 17870 are part of a series of two-component epoxy primer coatings which provide advanced crack resistance using Hempel’s patented fibre technology. They can be applied in immersed and non-immersed areas of any offshore asset, from offshore platforms and drilling rigs through to support vessels.

ClassNK Amends Steel Ships Class Rules

Classification society ClassNK announced  that it had released an updated edition of the Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships. ClassNK continuously reviews, updates and amends its technical rules and guidance as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the safety of life and property at sea, and to protect the marine environment. The rules and guidance are amended regularly to reflect the latest research results from damage investigations as well as changes made to relevant international conventions, IACS Unified Requirements, national regulations and requests from the maritime industry. M/V "New Expedition" Delivered

New Design-11th Cape-size Bulk Carrier of Dunkerque-max Type. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES with President Mr. Yasuhiko Katoh) completed and delivered 174,600 dwt type bulk carrier, MV "New Expedtion" (MES HULL No. 1825) at its Chiba Works on February 1st, 2013 to Salute Maritime S.A., Panama. This ship is the 11th ship of the designed Cape-size Bulk Carrier of Dunkerque-max Type(*). It enables effective cargo handling, easy maintenance of cargo holds and structural safety by adopting a double-side skin to cargo holds construction.

Jotun Passes IMO PSPC for COT Tests

Jotun reports that it successfully completed testing of coating systems consistent with the new IMO PSPC rules for cargo oil tanks (COT), scheduled to come into force next year. The new IMO PSPC rules for cargo oil tanks (COT) will go into effect January 2013. Focused on maintaining the long-term integrity of tanks, the new standard requires that all coatings used in the tanks must provide long-term protection against the corrosive effects of crude oil. PPG Coatings to be Approved Under IMO PSPC

PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings (PMC) business announced that SigmaPrime 700 and SigmaPrime 700 LT coatings by PPG will be applied to a vessel being built in for Chandris Hellas that will be the first built in full compliance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) ballast tank coatings regulation titled Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC). SigmaPrime 700 and SigmaPrime 700 LT coatings have received Lloyd’s Register type approval certificates in accordance with the IMO PSPC. The standard calls for shipyards, coatings manufacturers, ship owners and classification societies to ensure that protective coating systems in dedicated sea water ballast tanks are specified, qualified, applied and inspected throughout the ship's construction.

RINA Launches Corrosion Prevention and Coatings Program

RINA joined forces with UK-based coatings testing company Bodycote to launch a global Corrosion Prevention and Coatings (CPC) program. The heart of the program will be a CPC Training Course for shipyard and shipowner staff, and testing facilities for type approval of coatings according to the new IMO requirements. The first courses will be launched in Korea in January 2008, with further courses in China beginning in March. Thereafter courses will be run world wide, as part of RINA's services to owners that go beyond classification. The first coating testing facility approved in accordance with IMO PSPC requirements and IACS PR34 has been established in the Bodycote Laboratory in Manchester, UK and further facilities worldwide are planned in the coming months.

CCS-DNV Technology Institute Inaugurated

CCS-DNV Technology Institute, a joint venture between the two leading class societies - China Classification Society and Det Norske Veritas, was recently inaugurated in Shanghai. The institute is the first of its kind in China. It aims to support both the maritime and offshore industries on various laboratory and research challenges. The first phase will focus on coating testing to respond to the IMO rules on PSPC. The institute’s coating laboratory performs testing according to the IMO’s PSPC requirement of prequalification testing of coatings for seawater ballast tanks. The practical testing is to simulate exposure by submerging samples into a tank of seawater and replicating the movement of the ship for 180 days.
