GE Gas Turbines for Japan’s JS Asahi Destroyer

Two GE LM2500 marine gas turbines power the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces (JMSDF) newest destroyer JS Asahi (DD119). This first of two new destroyers in the JMSDF’s Asahi-class destroyer program was recently commissioned by the JMSDF. The ship was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) at its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works in Japan. “We work in concert with IHI, our longstanding partner in Japan, to supply LM2500 marine gas turbines to the JMSDF for this new destroyer and other surface combatant programs,” said GE’s Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, Marine Operations.

GE Gas Turbines Power Japanese Destroyer

GE's Marine Solutions reports that the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned its second Izumo-class helicopter-carrying destroyer. The new JS Kaga (DDH 184) is powered by four GE LM2500 marine gas turbines, and was commissioned at the Japan Marine United Corporation shipyard in Yokohama on March 22, 2017. First-in-class JS Izumo (DDH 183) and JS Kaga are the largest surface combatants in the JMSDF fleet. Both feature a powerful and reliable combined diesel and LM2500 gas turbine propulsion system, with the gas turbines using GE’s integrated electronic controls.

GE's Marine Solutions announced it will provide IHI, Tokyo, Japan, with two LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines for the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force's (JMSDF) new 8,200-ton class Aegis destroyer. “GE's LM family of gas turbines are already part of numerous JMSDF ships, most recently the Izumo-class DDH helicopter carriers and 5,000-ton class destroyer programs,” said Brien Bolsinger, Vice President, Marine Operations, GE, Evendale, Ohio. “By using our marine gas turbines, the JMSDF benefits from long term support, operational efficiency and commonality within their fleet.

Siemens Receives Major Order for Russian LNG Project

Siemens will deliver the key components for a power station that is going to supply the future Yamal LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) production plant in Northern Russia with electricity and heat. The Siemens scope of supply comprises the design, manufacture, factory testing, delivery, installation and commissioning of eight SGT-800 industrial gas turbines as well as nine step-up transformers. Four of these turbines will additionally be equipped with waste heat recovery units. The power plant will have an electrical output of 376 megawatts (MWe). The order has been placed by the Russian engineering company Technopromexport (TPE), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rostec State Corporation.

Rolls-Royce Secures £100 Million Contract

Rolls-Royce, a global power systems company, has announced an order worth more than £100 million to supply integrated power and propulsion systems for seven offshore drilling vessels in Brazil. The ships will be built at the Atlântico Sul shipyard for Brazilian oil company Petrobras. Rolls-Royce will equip each of the seven vessels, which will satisfy local content requirements, with six large thrusters and six Bergen diesel generator sets. Together, the systems will be used to propel the vessels to and from drill sites and to accurately maintain their positioning during drilling operations. No Hands ISR Project Involves US/Japan Firms

MSHIP Co., a San Diego naval design firm joins with Uemura Seisakusyo Co., Ltd. of Japan on the project. MSHIP has designed the next generation high-speed military platform — Stiletto ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) — which will focus on future warfare with extensive use of unmanned systems. The Stiletto ISR, a mothership for unmanned systems, will offer easy launch, support and retrieval of unmanned vehicles. MSHIP's products, including the Stiletto ISR, received great response at the 2012 Japan International Aerospace Exhibition.

Caterpillar Offer 3500C Tier 3 Marine Power Solutions

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is pleased to announce starting in January 2012, the legendary Cat 3500C marine engines will enter full production meeting United States EPA Tier 3 regulations. Cat 3500C Tier 3 compliant offerings will include propulsion, auxiliary and diesel electric propulsion (DEP) engines. All Cat 3500C offerings will not require after treatment modules to meet Tier 3 regulations as a result of incorporating innovative fuel and air system modifications into the design of the engines. “We’re pleased to offer our customers impacted by the United States EPA regulations a timely, comprehensive power solution that doesn’t require after treatment or sacrifice performance,” said Bob Hallengren, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems Product and Application Manager.

FGH Delivers Power Barges

Waller Marine, Inc., took delivery of two 30 MW power barges from the Friede Goldman Offshore shipyard, Pascagoula, MS, in April 2001 and immediately loaded the vessels on the M.V. Smit Express for their dry tow to Lagos, Nigeria. The 60 MWs of power will be connected to other similar vessels, delivering much needed electricity to the city of Lagos. Each power barge was designed by Waller to ABS River Rule standards, each supporting a single General Electric, frame 6B, industrial gas turbine generator set, controls, switchgear, main transformer and associated equipment. Waller contracted Friede Goldman for the vessel's construction, installation and testing under a fast track schedule to deliver the units to Lagos. Waller is currently designing power barges for installation in U.S.
