5 ‘Gotchas’ of Marine Insurance
“Gotchas” are pitfalls, catches, bait and land mines – a kicker, snare or snag. They are surprises and, in the world of insurance, surprises are rarely a good thing. ‘Gotchas’ can be caused by different things. It may be the age of the coverage forms; it may be case law has moved on beyond the policy’s intent. Or, it may be there is a ‘disconnect’ between policy wording and current business practices. Sometimes, these things occur simply because some insurance contracts are impenetrable. Insurance policies are a distinctly difficult set of documents to understand.
IMCA ROV Workshop
Oceanology International 2010, held in London last month, proved to be the ideal place for the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) to hold a dedicated workshop on remotely operated vehicle (ROV) umbilical and handling systems, the first being at IMCA’s Annual Seminar in November 2009 in Rio de Janeiro. “The workshops have proved to be highly rewarding occasions, bringing together IMCA members from around the world including engineering managers; vessel operators; ROV contractors; ROV suppliers – including manufacturers and designers of handling systems and umbilicals; and the insurance world,” said Hugh Williams. Finalists for Heyerdahl Award Announced
The Expert Committee announced a short list of two candidates for The Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award. This year the awarding ceremony takes place in Japan, host to EXPO-2005 under the theme Natur’s Wisdom. The Heyerdahl Award’s Expert Committee, lead by Terje Staalstrøm (DNV), have concluded a short list of two worthy candidates, who have demonstrated outstanding technical innovation and outstanding and proactive environmental policy and activities.
