Broadband Demand

(Photo: Intelsat)

Satellite-based connectivity has always played a critical role for the maritime sector. As the communications expectations of ship owners, passengers and crews continue to grow, maritime service providers are seeing a transformation in the type and quantity of applications that need to be supported at sea. The advent of VSAT broadband services is driving a shift away from traditional, low-level L-band connections that ship operators have relied upon for decades. VSAT services are preferred to respond to the demand for high-speed broadband that can support bandwidth-intensive applications.

In the next few years, demand for bandwidth on the high seas will grow, in no small part due to technology that is making operations more efficient and keeping crews and passengers healthy, happy and connected. Just a few years ago, a cruise-going family might have brought a single laptop computer and maybe a cell phone aboard. Today, cruise companies find that the average family shows up with 10 connected devices. And within the commercial maritime sector: crew members, away at sea for months at a time, are hungry for a robust connectivity experience to stay in touch with family and friends.

Intelsat Announces Q4 and 2015 Results

Intelsat S.A., a provider of satellite services, has announced preliminary financial results for the three months and full year ended December 31, 2015. Intelsat reported preliminary total revenue of $571.3 million for the three months ended December 31, 2015. The company expects to incur a non-cash impairment charge resulting in a substantial reduction of our $6.8 billion goodwill and other intangible assets. The charges primarily reflect a reduction to the goodwill value established as a result of the acquisition of Intelsat in 2008. At present, we believe this process will be completed in the next two weeks after which we would expect to file our Annual Report on Form 20-F for the year ended December 31, 2015.

Intelsat’s EpicNG is on the Ways

While the true uptake of broadband across the maritime sector has been slow to develop, a number of market conditions are conspiring to drive the service mainstream. Intelsat’s Kurt Riegelman discusses the matter with Maritime Reporter & Engineering News. While the advent of full broadband in the maritime sector is the exception rather than the norm, the tides are changing as companies increasingly deploy fast, modern ‘land-like’ comms in an effort to achieve everything from attracting and retaining crew, to streamlining business operations at sea and enhancing safety.

Big Data: Big Value or Big Risk?

Danelec Marine proposes to use the ship’s VDR as a data hub for ship telematics. (Credit: Danelec Marine).

We wish we had a dollar for every time we heard or read the words Big Data at the Nor-Shipping exhibition last month. We might even have collected enough cash to buy a round of expensive Norwegian beers for the gang at the Fridtjof bar. Seriously, Big Data is one of the most talked-about subjects at maritime industry gatherings. At Nor-Shipping there were no fewer than half a dozen panels and conference sessions focusing on the role of Big Data and analytics in commercial shipping.
